Two things bro, for us, your viewers: You mention that you are fishing near Hooters. Is that a city? No, of course not, but I found out by the area code on that sign that you are near Doral, Florida. Ok, no problemo, but next time, enlighten us of your whereabouts.
Second, you mention that it is a "jag" Are you reffering to a Guapote Jaguar. If you look it up, they only live in the waters of Central America (they are yummy yummy fried in butter).
So, there is a mystery. Yes, they look like a guapote but Florida?
There used to be a restaurant in my city called The Hungry Fisherman. Thay had a big, lit, glass aquarium in the middle with one big Guapote Jaguar. It was great to see it feed on live minnow and sardines.....
Happy fishing

He probably killed every single fish in this video with how he treated them. A lot of fish die from concussions during handling since they don't normally experience forces out of their neutrally buoyant watery environment. Dragging the fish in onto ground, dropping the fish onto grass, dehooking and chucking the fish (and hitting concrete first), the fish thrashing around probably gave them a death sentence. What's the point of even releasing if just to get a clear conscience.

Jesse Pettrey wtf is you don't get? He has admitted in other videos to releasing juveniles, he has admitted to moving invasive fish from one body of water to another, and in at least one he plants an ocean crustacean and kicks it in a spillway. Ffs. Believe whatever you want. This shit has real consequences. Florida's entire eco system is already messed up from people doing this.

No it is completely legal to catch and release fish that already live in a body of water, when it says reintroduce it means if he were to just buy alot of these fish and release them into the water.

It is not the publics duty to have to catch and remove of fish.
REPVILE
REPVILE - 7 years ago
He can not reintroduce these fish legally. Once caught they should be disposed of or taken away. He is aware that all of these are non native and invasive yet knowingly puts them back.
ItsNitsua
ItsNitsua - 7 years ago
If it was already in the body of water he was fishing at he broke no laws as it was already in the body of water. It is not the public's job to capture non-native fish so i don't see how he could get into any kind of trouble.

https://www.fws.gov/invasives/faq.html#q5 - if you want to read up on how he is in no way breaking the law.

Gavin Pickens aye im from arkansas too! little rock. where are good fishing spots?
Brian Mitchell
Brian Mitchell - 7 years ago
Gavin Pickens A Jag is a South American Chiclid, and this is freshwater, may be a little brackish. this is the first time seeing this guy and im guessing he is in Florida, near the Keys?? A lot of these are probably fish that were in tanks at some point and discarded because they were too big or agressive, and are able to live in a tropical environment like Florida. They then breed and all sorts of hybrids come about. Jags can be very agressive and will kill game fish like bass and crappie, what you are use to in Arkansas.

I ain't never seen that species. Dude be careful with water moccasins. Last time I was there, there were tons of them chillin near the banks.
John Burgess
John Burgess - 7 years ago
The Peacock Bass and Grass Carp were introduced by the state, the grass carp to keep the canal network clear of growth, and the Peacock Bass for another game fish to generate interest and sell fishing licenses.
The peacock bass and grass carp are a good fit, they don't overwhelm.

All the other fish species that are here and not supposed to be though are all a problem. Even in salt water we have the problem with the Lion Fish taking over reefs.

Soooo many damn invasive species here that have set up shop and not leaving any time soon. All kinds of reptiles, fish and plants, and birds, sometimes you hear and see a flock of quaker parrots flying over.

There's even a wild vervet monkey colony in Dania FL, and wild peacocks (birds) in downtown Fort Lauderdale by the court house.

It's a lot worse than most people think.

Dustin Rogers Thank you for the information. I was aware of that law, especially with the pythons, bias and tegu's. But the only fish I'm aware of is the "snakehead." I was not even aware the Peacock Bass had become so prevalent in Florida! Wow! you guys have TONS of "invasive" species.
Thanks again!

Dr. Sebastian Wolf, M.D.
In case you're misinformed its actually illegal to return an exotic or invasive species back to the water when caught in Florida. they are either to be taken as food which most are delicious, or destroyed. No matter the size.

John Burgess 100% AGREE on the idiots!!!!!! It makes me PUKE when I see...first, people NOT catching then releasing. But secondly....is the uneducated, who THINK they are doing right when they "catch & release," but they do it with DRY HANDS!! That fish will die a slooow and painful, death!
Dry hands wipe off the fish's natural bacteria fighting "slime." When dry hands wipe that slime off....the fish can get all manner of infection and bacterial illnesses that cannot be healed, because it's the slime the person wiped off that protects their scales and skin from being infested WITH THOSE "Cancer like" illnesses to the fish!!
Before handling a C&R fish...PLEASE......ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOUR HAND IS WET BEFORE TOUCHING THE FISH!!!!!!!!!
Thank you....

no doubt. Those were the days for sure... you must of went to Miramar High. I went to McArthur but I did know some ppl from Miramar. I miss fishing down there but I don't miss the traffic that's exploded since the last time I was visiting.
Ga.KayakAngler
Ga.KayakAngler - 7 years ago
naw I never fished that spot. Most of my fishing was from Pines Blvd. north, east and west of that. Hell I even fished the lake at BCC...Got kicked out once though. lol I would hide in the bushes when the rent-a-cop would be driving around the lake. lol caught some nice chunks though...I even fished the turnpike lake and them small canals around the back. Got kicked out multiple times by the toll ppl and by the state troopers when they caught me running across the freeway. it's funny but I remember catching a snook right in front of CB Smith park with a rapala. I was shocked that a snook was so far inland. I've caught some monsters out that way on spinnerbaits, plastic worms, jerkbaits....I could go on and on dude. Anyways I'm sure Miramar had some sweet places since most of the waterways are connected in some fashion.

Since it seems like we are all from around the same hood, theres a little cutout lake spot on a canal down in Miramar , University Dr by countyline rd. Its by the iheart media building on Riviera Blvd.

Before it was built up there and it was a empty field this cutout connecting lake was there, it's connected to the canal that runs under the Miramar Pkwy bridge, and I also belive with culvert pipes it connects to the canal that runs up University Dr.
When I used to fish there, there were bass, peacock, grass carp, some gar, and the usual suspects of cichlids, and oscars and catfish an plecos and stuff. It was a good spot, and I don't think many people fish it, haven't been there in a long time, but I never see anyone back there except for people that work at the station. Been thinking about going back, its been a long while.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Miami,+FL/@25.9739408,-80.2390216,455m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x88d9b0a20ec8c111:0xff96f271ddad4f65!8m2!3d25.7603198!4d-80.189209

Above is google maps satellite view of it, its a nice little pocket of water just about anyone could fish all of it from the banks. and it seems to hold most of the fish from that canal system as a gathering point.

I ate that gar...lol kidding....I've fished basically from Pines Blvd. to Sheridan St. like all the time. I met quite a few young anglers on that canal when I rode my bike from my house (Near McArthur High School) all the way down to 75 west. I fished almost every lake, canal, ponds...even the private ones. Hell me and my buddies rode our bikes all the way to Dania pier once and fished. Good ole days....now all the cow pastures are gone and shopping malls and apt/homes are on them. Maybe I know you? that would be funny...

I'm real familiar with Silver Lakes from about 15 years ago.

I have some sweet land locked tarpon spots out in Davie. No idea how they got in there, but again its been years since i've fished any of those spots, and you know how it goes, idiots kill off the fish instead of catch and release.
Ga.KayakAngler
Ga.KayakAngler - 7 years ago
John Burgess I know where you're talking about. a real excellent spot to catch peacock bass is at silver lakes. West on pines Blvd. near 75. there's a public park across the residential homes. try that place. tons and tons of peacocks!
John Burgess
John Burgess - 7 years ago
BassRecon I live a mile from there roughly! it is university and pines blvd.
the fishing is better down towards county line rd. at the Broward / Dade border. there's a canal pumping station there right by the turnpike overpass that sometimes holds some monster fish.

Is Joey going to bother acclimating and quarantining his new pet? If not? It's a pretty good recipe for disaster. You totally destroyed the fish's immunity system by keeping it out of water for a few minutes and throwing it in a cooler with water that is, in light of your previous videos, not even close to the water it came out of. if Joey compounds the problem by simply dumping the poor thing in his tank? The other inhabitants will be exposed to every pathogen carried by the fish and even that fish might succumb to whatever pathogens it was exposed to in the wild because it had its immunity system compromised.

I'm not a dick and don't want to sound like the "fun police" but, speaking as someone who has successfully kept and raised both freshwater and saltwater fish for 50 years, you have a whole lot to learn about handling fish.

Falling in the water while catching and releasing the fish of a lifetime doesn't "suck". It just added to the whole experience!

The only thing that "sucks" is that I don't have pictures and/or video! The whole fight, had it been recorded, would have competed with any fishing video on YouTube! Big fish? Long fight? Old geezer falls in the water and can't get out? It would have gone viral!

The experience, in and of itself, is more reward than a whole lot of fishermen have ever experienced in their entire lives. And? Considering the fact that I have only started fishing in that particular place for a couple months; I just might beat it! In fact...

The only reason I was able to land the giant sturgeon is that I had already hooked into a couple big fish I couldn't bring in with light tackle. I was fishing with a couple guys near that spot when I hooked into a fish I couldn't beat. They had a good laugh when i proclaimed; "I've hooked into the underground railroad!" That was about the time I started cranking down the drag in the hope I would break off before I got "spooled" but I lost about half my line.

I have seldom used anything heavier than 10lb. test mono in fresh water. I decided to go with 30lb. test "SpiderWire" so I could deal with the snags and, hopefully, pull big fish out of the current. But? The result exceeded my wildest dreams. I was hoping for a 20lb cat and I got a, perhaps, 50 pound sturgeon.

BTW. During the last few seconds of the fight my reel, for lack of a better term, "exploded". No more "WalMart Special" reels for me!

pete sampson that sucks man, but well worth it i would say.. i would of probably been more excited than you, and deff would of helped! cheers!
pete sampson
pete sampson - 7 years ago
Ah! Now I get it. You care too!

No harm done. I keep far fewer fish than I once did but I do keep any that manage to get the hook down into the gills or the gut and I have some very prolific sunfish lakes near my home that probably actually benefit from having a few harvested.

BTW. Last Monday I was fishing on the bank of the Mississippi in downtown St. Paul, Mn, and caught a 54" sturgeon. My first ever! Did I have my camera with? Nope. Did anyone happen along the walking path and notice me battling a fish nearly as big as me and offer to shoot a picture? Nope. Did I slip on the wet mud, slide into the river along with the fish, and find myself unable to climb back out on said wet mud? Yes! Did anyone decide to come by at that moment and help an old coot climb out of the river? Nope.

I had to swim and wade about 30-50 yards to a pile of rocks I could use to haul myself out and then, since the rocks were covered with the same river silt that gets more slippery than ice when it's wet, I had to wait till I stopped dripping before trying to get back to my spot so I called it a day. Then, since I try to take the bus whenever I can avoid driving, I got to about 5-6 miles from my house when the people in back of me started getting loud about the godawful stench so I figured it would be a good idea to walk the rest of the way home before I got myself banned from the bus line. I swear I still stink like that damned mud! Maybe I manged to get some of it embedded in my nose?

Needless to say; I have a memory that will last me the rest of my days and I will keep telling the story. I'll add about an inch a year to the sturgeon so it will, hopefully, be "trophy class" by the time I die or forget said story.

Cheers!

pete sampson i was just talking shit man, im glad you have a passion about something. i love/enjoy fishing. catch and release only for me tho
pete sampson
pete sampson - 7 years ago
I care, Miguel. I have a almost 60 year passion for all things fishy. I love catching them, eating them, swimming with them (including sharks) raising them, breeding them and even trying to save them from ignorance whether they are wild or kept as pets.

I have bred and reared everything from guppies to clown fish and even had a pair of "Scooter Blennies" that would spawn every few months though I was never able to raise any of them. There's still some element that we are missing when it comes to rearing them in a tank but I digress.

I have written several articles about fish keeping over the years and won't hesitate to offer my advice when I think it might help. It took about a $2,500.00, in 1970's money, disaster to convince me that all fish should be quarantined before adding them to a tank or pond. The worst part is that a couple of the fish I lost I have never seen for sale again. But it seems like some people only learn via "the burned hand". My hands were well and truly burned and if I can save someone else the experience I will gladly do so.

Cheers!

Dude seriously needs to work on his fish handling skills. When you handle a fish like in this video on several occasions, it is disrespect to the life you are enjoying. Stop releasing them with pliers only, and if you must then make sure it's over water. One of those cyclids got dropped onto the rock retaining wall. Seriously, if you fish don't be afraid to handle them to release them properly.

Dr. Sebastian Wolf, M.D. - 7 years ago
pete sampson VERY ACCURATE! The transport cooler/container, should be filled with canal water!
Then...the fish should go through a time of quarantine while it slowly treated with parasite killing chems. Then, it should slowly be acclimated to tank water. And ONLY THEN....should it be released into the tank. And PRAAAAY....it doesn't EAT EVERYTHING IN YOUR TANK IN 8.7 seconds!!!!!!

pete sampson - 7 years ago
Well? You also recently had an ick outbreak from wild caught fish you failed to quarantine. Jags are, indeed, very hearty but they can still carry something that will wipe out a tank or pond. You obviously have the passion and the knowledge but you seem to let your excitement override your common sense. I've done more than a bit of that myself but I have become more patient and cautious as I've gotten older!
