actually it was a mixed tropical tank of tetras and guppies.my first every fish I was give to care for by myself which I did keep in a proper sized tank with all the equipment needed and I got it to 9 years.amazing what simple research and proper care can do.

+Ann Gillings Spinksmost cold water tanks are for goldfish and koi.these fish can be ticker to keep cause they need big tanks to avoid stunt and it gets even worse when trying to keep cold waters cause they are often feeders and out of all the fish in the store have a very high chance of already being sick.plus to add on top of that their bio load is massive then for a new keeper who wants a simple ten gallon they aren't the best choice.

tropical fish on the other hand common in a variety of sizes but most often your going to common across live bearing fish,tetras and bettas and these fish stay small and can easily go in 10 gallon.they also have a low bio load and since stores sell them as pets while there is still disease risk it is a lot less then that of cold water fish.

coldwater tanks are not super easy beginning tanks, and using those calicos as an example of a cold water fish will give bad perceptions, goldfish need perfect conditions to thrive

he didnt lie. tetras are generally not jumpers, your water parameters were probably just not right for the fish and the only way out was up

tropical fish are a hell of alot easier to look after than goldfish. gold fish need better water (with just the right amount of salt) 10gallon min per fish! fresh water are in most chases harder and dont need the high amount of filtering that goldfish need. just my 2 pence :P
