Lipless Crankbaits Tips For Spring Bass Fishing

They can be burned through the water column, slow rolled and "ticked" through vegetation and cover, or hopped and dragged along the bottom like a jig. All of these presentations are effective during different Spring conditions, though some are more effective than others on different lakes. For anglers that travel lake to lake or anglers that want to be well rounded on their home lake, its important to own baits for each different "style" of lipless crankbait fishing. ________________________________________________________________ Need Apparel? You guys have the best fishing videos on YouTube every thing I know about bass fishing I have learned on YouTube. Learned a lot from flukemaster but lost all interest in his videos after he got sponsored now there’s not a lot of value in it anymore just pushing there stuff. I understand the need for sponsorship but I think it ruined his videos. I hope you guys continue to give us honest opinions.

Been teaching my friend how to bass fish for about a month now. Today we stopped by the lake before i went to work. Fresh after the rains, waters really muddy. He started drop shoting a black senko. First this guy catches a 20lb carp then about 15 min later i talk him into giving it a longer leader. Two casts later he catches a 12.69lb bass

Great video, as always keep em coming, would love to see an in depth video on hardware, why you change treble hooks to what sizes to styles, how to big of hook could off balance bait to anything Matt and Tim can come up with, I think it's a critical part of hardbaits, and would love to here more from you guys thanx

My lipless collection is out of control and honestly its because of you guys lol. (Not a bad thing at all)! But recommed for a hook video like when to use a wide gap work hook vs a traditional worm hook. And what size hook for soft plastics and why, how to tell if its to small or too big. Took me awhile on my own to learn all of that and help from fellow angles but i think you guys could make and awesome and informative video with hooks for soft plastics.

I've seen people crush bass on purple and yellow cranks. When would you recommend using this color? Clear water, muddy water?
DK Dice
DK Dice - 6 years ago
KeepCalm FishOn anything with yellow or carturse is good for stained water. But that color pattern can work in clear also. Imitating a sunfish or perch etc.. Depends what the bass are eating.

I've been wondering that myself. They seem to be out of vogue, at least in some circles. But I had incredible luck last year on a Rippin' Rap and caught my 9-lb. PB on a Clackin' Rap the year before. And tons more on Shad Raps and other Rapalas.

Gripping Lips Fishing
Gripping Lips Fishing - 6 years ago
Now I know why they always replace the hooks on lures.... I just got home from the lake and am sick to my stomach. Had a possible pb bass bend out my treble on my favorite jerk bait. When the fish was bellowing on the surface it's belly looked like a bowling ball then made one hard run and I felt the hooks come loose. Got my lure to shore and 1 of the front trebles was bent completely out...I won't be able to sleep for a week. Going to go buy new trebbles for all my hard plastics tomorrow ;(
Caleb Le
Caleb Le - 6 years ago
Have ya'll tried ima's suspending vibe? I've caught the majority of my fish on it this spring. My only gripe is that you can't burn it, but it works really well fishing slow at the ponds I fish.
Felix Martell
Felix Martell - 6 years ago
I've been using the cotton Cordells for a long time and never had any problems with my hookup ratios. Only when my hooks get dull & even then still manage to hookup a decent amount of times. I think because 1 out of the 3 trebles always seems to be sharp. Its always the one facing away from the lure. Now if i swap them out for premuim hooks it doesn't seem to be a problem. I've never used other brands besides the rattle traps n cotton Cordell but will do so now. As always awesome video's guy's & thanks for doing all the hard work for us. You guys think about your viewers (subscribers) & put us 1st & thats the reason you guys have so many subscribers who love to watch your videos. I personally can't wait till you guys come out with the new ones. Thanks guys.

Personally, I've found sexy shad, gold, and the carp color to be my favorites. All though different variants of the carp, like orange craws are amazing too. All of course used under specific conditions. Got on a good red eye bite in February during a cloudy cold front on a golden red eye shad.

So, how do I know where to look for the bass on my local pond? How do I know if I need a lipless for bottom or one for mid depth or one like the cotton cordel? How much time do I spend with each one until I find the correct one? The lipless game is a tough one for me =(

Matt, another awesom video, I hated lipless crankbaits, hated them, couldn't get a bite ever. Well after watching these lipless videos I decided to give it a try this spring when the ice came off our lakes and nothing other than a jig or swimbait would work barely. Bottom hopping a lipless outsined them both! I did experiment with taking the back hook off (a Mark Daniels Jr. trick) around wood and man I really enjoy lipless fishing now.

It was a Storm Texas Shad 1/2 ounce in chrome with a black back, they haven't been made in a lot of years, they also made a 3/8ths ounce size LIL Tex. I have other brands of lipless cranks, but none has been as steady of producer of fish than them, and they are probably the plainest looking ones.

I have lived all over the south east and carolinas, and I have never in my life bought a red colored lure EVER of ANY type... Even my soft or hard craw baits are grey, muddy, or black.... Come to think of it, I don't think I have ever seen a red colored crawdad in the wild... My go to lipless cranks are the silver or gold live target koppers shad, or different colored lipless yo-zuri's, or even the rapala "two tone" single clacker lipless... been having amazing luck this spring with that NEW mini A-rig looking live target(?) baitball spinner lure thing, it has been killing it for me!! That and the fish head primal spin with a keitech have just been amazing

Any thoughts on the Rapala Rippin Rap? I recently got a couple of these and look forward to trying them as soon as the ice melts.

I caught HUGE amounts of fish last year on the Rippin' Rap. It was one of my three go-to cranks for the year (the others were Shad Raps). The largest was 6.4 lbs on the #5 size...small bait, big fish, no matter...

So I’m curious: why isn’t the Duo Realis vibration in your box? It’s unlike any other lipless I’ve used. BTW, another great video.

Great video guys.we just got about 12 inches of snow by me. I’m in Long Island NY.i was just wondering if you saw the larger lipless from ratltrap I just bought one on clearance. It has saltwater hooks on it but do you think it would be any good in freshwater situations. Thank you again guys

I’m really surprised that people say they have bad hook ups. I have no issues even with Academy specials. Great info Matt.

Another great video! I'd love to see a video similar to this one about how to fish a chatterbait or bladed jigs in the spring time. Keep up the great content guys, you're still the best fishing channel out there!!!

I have 2 hand-me-down'd ooold RatLTraps that kinda slow-sink and nose-down drift along off the bottom, great for more subtle spring stream drifting jerk-pop fish catching method. Surprised you didn't bring size into this, especially in low-vis waters/tough days; in muddy spring waters stepping up to like an 08 size Rattlin Rap in Holographic Shad or Silver Gold has made all the difference many days when a normal lipless just wasn't enough to turn em on/bring em in. That Silver Gold pattern works absolutely great in stained spring rivers like the North Susquehanna imitating young carp and fallfish besides the shiners'n'shad here.

Informative, great selection to choose from. Video was a big plus. Instructional value on sink to bottom lift or jerk and settle to bottom repeatedly technique is a win win. Thanks!

Harrison C. Split ring pliers will take all your hassle away. I always wondered how you could casually swap hooks and rings. I bought the pliers they link in their videos and I've successfully swapped out all my rings and hooks on my nice jerks, cranks and topwater

Good info in the hook to land explanation. I've lost a few on lipless. Your commit on why might be spot on in my case. I may need to let the fight take longer.

White Raven I got the rod down I just get a little to excited and try to hoist them too fast

You need a deep loading mod-fast to moderate rod action to fish these. Hook ups will improve 100%.

My favorite bait category, always this to learn something new. Spro aruku shad is another good one, runs really nose down and comes through cover well.
