Sometimes we only learn the hard way despite good advice!
I was aging/cycling a tub for another mini pond and noticed loads of mosquitos so eagerly put some of my growing guppies in to devour them which was great in the cool evening. I did not stop to think in the slightest how this tub with no shade, no air pump and very few plants would fair during the day, and in the middle of a heatwave! Came home at 3pm the next day to find my fish tangled in the hair algae. Went to shake them out and realised the water was almost hot! And the guppies climbed right back onto the hair algae the minute I put it back! probably both trying to get out of the water and get a bit of oxygen! :( quickly moved them back to their shaded pond with an air pump. Now fingers crossed that they survive :( I checked the temperatures. the shaded tubs were 32 degrees at the surface. The unshaded tub of doom was 39 degrees celcius throughout!!!

I have another solar powered air pump ordered and on the way. I've found them super effective

An airpump should help that other pond cool down as well.

I live in a mobile home park and for me to keep ponds for grow out and for growing plants I have to make it look like a closed off Grow bed-Greenhouse. In a 24'x8'x3' area I will be fitting 24 "55 gallon home depot totes". The hard part is that I can not run power to it! Solar is my only option but that should be enough for running air. If it makes spare power I should be able to run a space heater or fan for heat on colder months and ventilation on hotter days.

You had a koi outside during winter. Was it filtered, fed, moved, or anything during winter? How big is its pond and how cold does it get?

Just airstones, and it usually only gets under 32 a few days out of the year here.

Building a 12'x8'x3' African Cichlid pond. What pump, size, ghp, do you recommend? I plan on having a waterfall filled with lava rock in a 55 gallon barrel fed by a skimmer in a 55 gallon barrel fill with sponges and filter floss. Thank you for all the time you give!

Aquarium Co-Op, that's awesome news. I have a pump that does 1000 ghp already. With head pressure and whatnot that'll reduce the flow and still be more than enough. I was worried I'd have to get some giant pump. You da man Cory!
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
I'd use water hyacinth and the flow can be pretty slow, most farms shoot for turnover once every 4 hours, so with 2k , that'd be 500 gallons an hour roughly.

I believe the pond will be about 2100 gallons but my maths could be wrong. Oh, and what plants do you recommend as the best for helping keep the pond clean? I'm in south Florida (West Palm Beach). Thanks again

Can I keep a guppie and Bristlenose pond in Australia year round? The hottest it gets is 45 degrees Celsius and the coldest it gets is 8 degrees Celsius?

Where abouts? I have a 550L pond in Western Sydney. Inhabited by Guppies, Platys and Bristlenose. I have put a 150w heater in it for about 3months just to be safe, but the rest of the year they are fine.

I suppose it can be done, you'll really have to watch temp swings and evaporation.

I need a little help with my betta. My halfmoon plakat betta has a few chunks out of his fins (no clue how they got there) and they just wont grow back! He has 26 degree C water and all parameters are 0. Its also a 5 gallon tank and its filtered and he gets fed NLS pellets with some brine and mosquito larvae.
thanks

do you by any chance have a video on how to make a tank divider for a ten gallon tank.,..I have 1 Betta in a 10g ... ideally ,I would like to add a divider to the tank because I'd like to add a koi Betta to my 10g...
BraydensBettas
BraydensBettas - 7 years ago
I recommend not doing divided tanks with bettas something always goes wrong, wether its one gets sick and infects the other (killing both fish) or one jumps over the divider and attacks the other fish injuring and potentially killing both fish.
im not saying you cant do it but i dont recmmend it. just silicone a piece of acrylic with flow holes drilled in it for flow.

Cory would you think you would be able to get some sort of large bags of pea gravel or river stones to make a substrate for mini ponds to increase the number or fry you get from egg scatterers being housed with shrimp and or snails in the outdoor ponds? Or any other ways you could think of to give the eggs protection from the shrimp and snails?

What would be a good fish for an indoor mini pond with goldfish? Preferably something that would breed like guppies maybe

Typically goldfish will eat anything that fit in their mouth so there won't be many options that could breed with them in there.

I recently buried a 100-gallon Rubbermaid stock tank in a very shady spot because the summers get brutally hot here in southern Oklahoma. I have about 15 species of plants living in it at the moment, all doing well so far. Still not sure if I want to stock it with fish or shrimp. It's my first go at a mini pond, so this, along with your GSAS talk, have been a tremendous help. Thank you, Cory!

Hey Cory, I ordered 3 Alleni Rainbow Chilaterina alleni 'Wapoga' rainbowfish for a 60 gallon 48" long rainbow tank. I can't find any info on their max size and compatibility within a boesemani, Herbertaxelrodi(which I already have) and themselves within a Planted 60 gallon. If you have any general info, tips, recommendations on the species ? I would be very appreciative. I can't much as far as aggressiveness or their max size. Thank you! Nick
