this happened to me and it was on brand new lures thrown in the box for later use not lures that were older. I'm guessing it's a flaw in that specific lure covered up by the paint. So basically it's take a chance on lures.

It happens when u have a bait in a cold temperature that is exposed to very hot air(ex: from your truck to your boat in the summer). Then in the bait condensation or water drops form in the bait and turn into a gas there for swelling the bait

I cut my teeth on fishing belle glade and Taylor Creek Area, my grandparents spents years and years and years on Lake Okeechobee. Both used to swear by the yellow and black Devils horse for topwater, but I never see a pro or even an amatuer/semi pro use a devils horse.....is there any particular reason why?

It's not the heat. Ive had a handful of my best baits blow out like this. It's got to be a manufacturer defect. I had 2 brand new KVD crankbaits in the same box one blew out one didn't.

Most likely caused by elevation change, maybe during driving. As you change altitude pressure changes. This is what causes ears to pop. A rapid elevation change, like when driving over mountains, could cause extra air to be sucked into the bait. If this air can't get out when pressure changes back it will cause extra pressure inside the bait and make it puff up.

This is caused by temp. I have been dealing with this for a long time. If your clear boxes are out in the sun, it is just like a green house. The temp inside the box skyrockets. You can drill a couple small holes to vent but then you have the issue of moisture. I usually try to keep my boxes out of the sun light. Lost so many baits because of this issue.

Some of my LC's are like that, mostly from leaving it out in the sun inside a box. Bassmaster had an article where people actually boil their crankbaits to change the action. I would keep the square bill as you may have a custom hunting one

Scott it is from the sun. 15 years ago we started having baits expand and pop from the sun heating them up.
It just sucks because lots of older baits that can not be replaced started doing this. We have been combating this by never leaving the boxes out in the sunlight. this has seamed to control it, but never set a box on the dash were the sun can hit it through the wind sheild this caused it to happen faster.
Kenneth Dennis

Hey Scott, my biggest concern would be the structural integrity of the lures being compromised and losing a winning bass during a tournament. Just thinking if the structure has changed, so has the anchor points of the hooks. Just curious on your thoughts about that. Personally, I'd salvage the hooks and trash the lure for that one reason.

Wow. I don't know what would cause that. I have a lot of baits that are very old. My dad's. I mean 30 to 40 years old. They don't do that. I'm pretty sure everything now is made differently. Materials and design has changed . Maybe the baits now aren't made as well as the old ones. They look better, they move much better, but it could be the plastics used are just not as durable as the baits made in the 70 and 80's . Maybe.

Rapala shadow raps do that really bad (nothing against them, the shadow rap shad is great) in my case I believe the heat from the sun is the cause. Now I keep all my hard baits out of direct sunlight for extended periods of time. Take care of your baits, like Scott said they are an investment.

Mulldrifter Z
Mulldrifter Z - 6 years ago
Scott please read this! Here is a tip for you on why this happens and how to help prevent it. It generally happens on older lures because wear and tear to it from fish teeth, rocks, trees and other things will put tiny holes/pockets into the lures that collect water. They may appear dry but as you put them into the lure box they could have collected a tiny bit of water in the inner shell of the lure and the general heat will push the water back out of the lure. Over time the holes (even if you cannot see them) become deeper and this process happens repeatedly until it gets those "stretch" marks you talked about. A way to prevent it, is to coat your older lures or lures that have significant teeth marks with a couple coats of clear fingernail polish (I am sure the wife could help you here! ;) ) occasionally. It takes a little time but it helps prevent this from happening and saves you money on tackle.

I want to add this cool trick as well. I get my 5 minute epoxi at the dollar store. I get some real fine glitter( not the coarse glitter ) in mother of pearl color. I mix it in as I am mixing the epoxi .Brush that on the lure and give it a sparkle to the finish. I have had plenty of experience refinishing and air brushing old lures, and carving my lures from wood. There is a lot of fine tuning to get a lure to run true. After a lure is carved it must be ballanced with lead on the underside of the nose of the bait.. Years ago I would take beach walks along the shores of lake Erie . We would find up to 50 lures along the shore. Some would be completely sanded out with no finish. I can take those old lures and make them look better than your 22 dollar lures in custom colors. I have made small crank baits 1.5 inches long to 18 inch long musky baits . My next challenge is to make some multy jointed big body swim baits with no lips. Making lures from scratch is an art and real pleasing when you can catch fish on a hand crafted bait you made yourself. Hey just send your old lures to me and I will refinish and paint them in some of my own custom colors. I have a color that is my proven called Lucky Lew. I am serious . Send them my way and I`ll fixx them up and tune them as well just for fun. Because you make all these great videos for us to enjoy I`ll pay it back by showing you what I can do for you. Cheers from Ontario Canada.

Don't use epoxy either bud. The super new school method is to dip your hard plastics into wet cement 23.5 hours prior to fishing. Never once have the stretched marks appeared on any of my baits again once I started using this technique. As an added bonus, my casting distance has gone up tremendously!
lewandlo
lewandlo - 6 years ago
Don`t use finger nail polish bud. It will react to your plastics and will melt them. That is old school. epoxy is the new coating and it is much harder. The trick is to do it to brand new baits and this will never happen. Use scotch brite to scuff them up after you remove the split rings and hooks.

HEY SCOTT, PLEASE READ THIS TO THE END!!!.....That is VERY interesting.....and killer information. THOSE SWOLLEN LURES REMIND ME OF THE ANTIQUE POCKET KNIVES THAT HAVE "CELLULOID" HANDLES. Celluloid was a very early version or type of plastic made back in the day, that DOES THE SAME THING YEARS LATER......AND NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO STOP "THE OFF-GASSING". These old pocket knives with celluloid handles will actually DESTROY the steel blades & frames of not only that particular knife itself, but if kept in a small box or area with OTHER knives WITHOUT celluloid handles, IT WILL DESTROY THE STEEL IN THOSE KNIVES TOO. The off-gassing actually causes the steel to rust & deteriorate very rapidly, even if properly stored with a de-humidifier. Another bad thing about that old celluloid material, is the fact it is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE. No matter if the celluloid was brand new, or 50 years old, the stuff erupts into flames. The factories that made that stuff back in the day actually BLEW UP & BURNED THE WHOLE FACTORY TO THE GROUND.......AS BAD AS GUNPOWDER!!! Needless to say, they stopped making celluloid altogether. I WONDER IF THOSE SWOLLEN LURES ARE NOW HIGHLY FLAMMABLE???? .......If you guys decide to try & light one on fire, STAND BACK......JUST IN CASE!!! If they ARE "highly flammable" now due to the build up of gas.......EVERYONE SHOULD BE WARNED. Hopefully they aren't. Can you imagine a box full of those lures being highly flammable IN A BOAT?!?!?!

Hey Guys: The problem comes from OUTGASSING. So why does outgassing occur? Either moisture inside is turned into gas by heat. Or plastic is chemically giving off gas due to heat. So why is moisture inside the bait? Answer: imperfect seals. Or why are chemical gases inside the bait? Answer: imperfect curing.

I've been fishin for 60 years and no one until you, Scot, has ever brought up this most keen observation of your tackle. My eyes will now and forever be focused on this characteristic of a specific bait. And, I have alot of them that are old. I'd have to say that this is the best fishing advice I have yet gotten from watching pro fishermen discuss fishing anywhere.

It's has to be the Florida heat. I have square bills and jerks that are over 6 years old that are fine. I do however remove all my tackle from the boat at the end of the day and put it in the garage. I live in Indiana and store my lures in a NON climate control garage.

Is it possible that the paint and clear coat on these baits due to being in a hard plastic case are being rattled around wether being bounced around on the water or as you travel on the road it is constantly being vibrated and shifted wears off the coating allowing moisture in and allowing them to swell and change their presentation
Nate Halstead
Nate Halstead - 6 years ago
I agree with your assessment. Heat and degassing of the plastics are causing them to swell. All plastics soften when heat is applied, add a little degassing of the plastic, and Bam! Swollen baits with swollen problems. I'm scared to look at my older baits now.

The baits have expanded because some are made of balsa wood. Which means they soak up water because they are either cracked somewhere on the body or the water seaps through the clear coat finish. The swell up once and cause the clear coat or epoxy coat to crack . They will dry out and become distorted and loose their trueness. If they are crooked or distorted they will not run correctly in the water..I sometimes get a balsa wood bait new and give it a scuff . Then I will give it an epoxy coat to give it a tough coat. Some fish will also ,because of their teeth poke tiny holes in the outer coating if you don`t give an epoxi coating. Hey those bait are fixable if you know how to tune a bait. SO don`t throw them away. Cheers from Ontario . Canada.

I took one of my co workers fishing with me a few years ago. He had an old Plano box with the folding trays. He reached in the bottom of that box and grabbed a wad of lures like Scott was holding up and shook it till a lure fell off and that’s how he chose what to fish with lol. It was the ugliest rebel crankbait, it was a dark brown with vertical stripes. He kicked my butt that day with that ugly crankbait lol. Moral of the story is you don’t need 4000 dollars worth of tackle to catch fish.
George Tellez
George Tellez - 6 years ago
Now I wouldn't say throw them away, there are some people like .e that would rather have defective lures. Sometimes in very pressured watersheds lures that are odd work way better than the out of the box perfect bait. You could do a giveaway of those lures because some people would love to have a lure from you such as myself. Fish will bite lures that don't look like ordinary lures. Brings more if the erratic and non-ordinary action. Also I see your truck in the back, very pretty truck

Its defiantly heat Scott. I left a box of crankbaits in my car once & they almost all swelled up & were ruined. You may want to look into insulating you storage compartments or even venting them so that extreme heat can't build up. That same heat will also stretch & weaken your line. Maybe some kind of power vent would help?

Best tip I have got in a long time. I have a box of deep crank baits that have done great for me. If a crank baits catches fish I change what box they go into and it’s my β€œtournament bait” box. I didn’t have any day tournaments in July and August so put that box in my truck. In September had a Championship at KY lake and could not get a bunch of my crank baits in tune. No matter what I did something was just off. I did notice the splitting on a few but not all. I am now convinced that I ruined that group of baits.

I wonder if you put some of those swollen baits in a freezer for awhile if they would shrink back up. The ball could rust and not rattle anymore if it's a rattling bait. It’s the combination between two different temperature changes what ever combination it is my grandfather is well known for fishing the FLW bass circuit and he had some hardbaits like that and he knew what it was and told and me what happens what happens is you temperature mixture and it effects all baits differently no matter if it your treble hard bait vice versa now on buzzbaits and spinnerbaits it curls up the skirts and then you have to reactivate the skirts with warm to hot water to rejuvenate the skirts now if the to long gone I throw the skirts away there no good and those’s are silicon skirts now also you after temperature change I’m sure you know a lot of this I’m just being informative after your with your hooks and wire baits to prevent rust spray your hooks and wires breads and blades with WD40 after ever outing just after you get back and that will always keep any metal pretty much as far as tackle goes now here’s a tip that will save you time and money keep your tackle in a shady cool storage area of some sort and check for cracks on your hardbaits and headed tackle more so lead and powder coat then tungsten and throw and cracked or flaky softbaits out except for hollow body lures because all they will do is become harder but that’s okay if there not like your other hollow bodies that just means because I’ve experienced it is that they we hit them harder once they get more of a feel of the hollow body bait then you will notice you will get a lot harder bites and it seems like more numbers as well now you hard frogs check them for cracks and how bad they are because you could still use them even with a little swell as well as hardbaits now if there To far gone chuck them hope that helps

There is no gas being created. Increasing the size of the container merely makes the gas inside less dense because gas always expands to fill the container it's in.Basically the lures float because their density has changed.

Ian Fenner
Ian Fenner - 6 years ago
David Venter this is very true. They manufacture them at one altitude and climate so there is gonna be a pressure difference once it's sealed and gets hot it will allow the body of the lure to soften up enough for the pressure to distort it. Nail on the head my friend. I live in Arizona so I know about the heat and not leaving stuff in your car during the summer. Cooked iPhones don't smell like Apple pie....

Bio-degrade able hard baits! Job security for the lure companies lol! But all seriousness Scott, makes me believe it could also b moisture and humidity related, I wonder if a moisture proof box such as bass mafia is a great steep at preventing that? It makes a great sales pitch!

how many of those baits that swelled up are made of wood. not all of those kind of baits are made of plastic bodies. if they are made of wood that could be part of the problem.

Awesome! Whoda thunk it. But Rapala does make slow rising and slow sinking jerkbaits. Likely because they already know about the bait swelling and it gives them an out :)

My baits do the same thing when I leave them in the car in summer. I lost all my sebile lipless cranks and all my storm cranks one hot day. My Xcalibur and Rapala cranks where unscathed.

Me neither, but the Heat of the Suns could do it, or the Nets you are using to bring the fish in, or maybe if you try to use Spurs instead of hooks it could possibly put Knicks in them, or are fishing in a Thunder storm. I'm not sure. We might need to use some Magic and bring in a couple Wizards to figure out this Bulls-hit.

This is caused from leaving your boxes in your boat in hot climates!! You should always keep your tackle in a controlled temperature environment!
dangerously72

I agree it'sΒ due toΒ heat, because last Summer I had brand new crankbaits in a container in my Ranger Z518 and several of them split completely open and others just swelled like inΒ the video.Β  I was upset but there is no other reason they could have split, other than excessive heat.Β  They had never been used, never in water....brand New lures.

Good point..but...
Lazy isn't an issue for most, I would think...
Are you down here in Florida? There's no avoiding a subtropical Summer.
Even if you bring your lures inside, the AC and hot fishing temps won't help.
Scott Martin posted an excellent video on what to look for on 'damaged lures.'
'Mr. Edmiston' ... when you say "climate controlled," it's just not possible for lots of anglers. At least there's common ground on the heat issue. Many fishermen keep their equipment in garages or sheds and can't bring them inside - for whatever reason.
-There is a question of what lure manufacturer has better quality. -

videojoe7 Don't be lazy!! Take your hard baits out of boat and put them inside!! After ruining several hundred dollars worth of baits that's what I started doing. It hasn't happened since! Glad I could help.

Did you even watch the video?

He said 'temperature changes' could cause it.
You tell me "pro," how one can "keep tackle in a controlled temperature environment." Please let us all know. Fresh or saltwater fishermen want to know.

Albert, don't fail us. Save Our Lures! Especially in Florida - we all want to keep our tackle in a "controlled temperature environment!"

videojoe7 well then why couldn't Scott tell us why it was happening! To me geniuses like yourself it's common sense. Just thought I'd make that clear for the kids not a pro like you my bad.
