Spinning for redfin: The redfin fishing witching hour

When the redfin are biting like crazy, it is hard to pass up the opportunity to head out fishing for them. Sure these fish are not the biggest fish in out waterways, but they're prolific, easy to catch and as you can see in this video every once in a while a slightly larger one will come along that is big enough to take a couple of fillets off. Rex Hunt once referred to redfin as the flathead of the fresh water. This is a humorous comment but also a very true comment as there are a lot similarities between the two. Redfin, known as perch or English perch in other countries are easy to catch, making them a great fishing option for the kids and younger people. Knowing how to catch redfin is quite simple as there are a number of different fishing techniques that will work. Spinning for redfin as seen in this video is a great way to catch them, so too is using soft plastics, minnow style lures and even flies. Bait fishing is also a very effective way of catching redfin perch with baits such as yabbies, shrimp, worms and mudeyes all working very well. Redfin are a very cannibalistic species of fish and will often eat smaller redfin and other small fishing species. If you're new to fishing, or introducing your kids to fishing, here in Victoria redfin are the perfect beginner species of fish to target. In this fishing video, I have titled it the redfin witching hour. I weas only fishing for around an hour and a half. The first half an hour was a little slow, but then the moment that sun dipped behind the hills to the west of Lake Buffalo, the redfin fishing was insane. The redfin just went mad as you can see. There really was a redfin fishing witching hour.

Nice calming session matey, I apologise if I’ve asked before but what’s the weight of the bigger perch out there? The uk record is just I’ve 6lb. I was just wondering if they get bigger out there with the warmer weather
robbiefishing
robbiefishing - 6 years ago
Black Country Piker Thanks mate. My best is 43.5cm and around 3lb. Anything over 40cm and 2lb is a good fish. 50cm redfin are usually around 5lb and are the holy grail of redfin fishing.

Hi robbie just a random question
we have a few dams stocked with redfin and trout at our farm with redfin averaging 40cm the water is very clear but unfortunately they are very dark in color and taste muddy what might cause this??.....thanks
robbiefishing
robbiefishing - 6 years ago
jason goldsmith Hi mate, clearer water will produce darker fish every time. As for the muddy taste I really don't know sorry mate, I've never heard of that sorry.

Hi Robbie, wow that lake is going to produce alot of nice size perch in a couple years. Red fin look similar to yellow perch here in the states. I'm thinking Redfin travel in schools also like yellow perch? Thanks for sharing Robbie that was awesome!
Chris Bittle
Chris Bittle - 6 years ago
Rod N Paddle Pretty cool man I hope you enjoyed your time here in the states, my dream is to some day visit Australia looks like a beautiful country. We catch our biggest yellow perch here usually in the winter through the ice don't know why but it seems it's always that way, great winter fun!
Rod N Paddle
Rod N Paddle - 6 years ago
Ive caught both species - actually the very first fish I caught in the US was a yellow perch - all that way to bass fish - and that's what I caught - ha ha. Anyway, slight colour differences - but essentially the same fish, although the bass pro I was fishing with was amazed to hear that we could catch Perch here bigger than 40cm/16 inch. I guess, being a native to the Nth America, they are part of the natural food chain, and essentially self regulating - Bass - Pike etc love munching on them.

Chris Bittle Thanks Chris, I actually researched this recently as I thought they were the same. They're the same genus but different species. Very similarly related.
