Travelling New Zealand on a Fishing Adventure

We caught a flight out of Australia to New Zealand's north Island expecting to connect with a few Yellowtail Kingfish off the rocks and have a fun little trip... What we got instead was an absolutely amazing week spinning with some legends of the sport! Milan from Big Angry Fish took us in and showed us what NZ Flats Fishing is all about. We then moved north and met up with a Ryota Segawa, a Japanese Catch and Release fisherman who targets big Kingfish on topwater lures off the rocks! We put a lot of content up on IG while the youtube films are being made and we're pretty active on IG in general. We also all have FB pages and our own Vlog channels where we put up smaller trips and just different content to these MTF films.

Now here's where shit went south! At the final stage of the fight I'm calling back to the woman "get the gaff" as I need to secure the fish and let him on his way but then I see riding up behind my king are three other fish and the middle one was at least a head bigger than then one I had on and WAY broader (25kg I think). My brain flipped and I started shouting back for the lure that I'd setup on 24kg gear with a 100g Raider with a 9/0 assist hook attached. After securing the first king on the rocks I grabbed the spinning gear and with all might set to launch the lure and from behind I heard a "WAAAAAAAIT" F'it when I turned around there was my 65kg woman with a 9/0 right through the underside of her forearm and my 18kg kings flapping about behind her still attached to the gaff.
So I snapped into gear and cut the lure off and tied it to her forearm and sent her packing back up that STEEP grassy bank towards the homestead. Now here's the point where I learned I'm not a good bf and this woman would never be the mother of my kids. I've a lump of a fish trashing around with my gaff still attached and it was WAY past the point of returning so I did what every good fisherman should, I took the time to fillet the sucker while my woman trudged up the slope in agony.
So after I collected my fillets and all the gear (that took two people to hike in) back up that grassy hill I knocked on the homestead and told them of our situation. If any of your LBG subs have been to Port Jackson they will know the family are the salt of the earth and they took us in without question. As it turns out the lady of the house was having a reunion with one of her friends who both studied as nurses some 30yrs earlier. So here they are after all the years when a casualty comes through their door followed by a wild eyed Irish man offering fillets of kingfish as payment for help.
The decision was made that they couldn't cut out the hook (no shit it's a 9/0 kingy hook) so we heading down the coast where a local nurse did rip it out and inject manuka honey into the gaping hole and we were finally on our way after paying in part with a substantial part of the remaining kings fillet. On our way through Coromandel town we pulled in for fuel and the guy pumping asked how my day was going. I proceeded to informed him of what I'd just gone through and he simply replied in true Kiwi spirit "Bro, what the hell was she doing away from the kitchen sink" and I broke my shite laughing!
The moral to this story for all those new to LBG, is really you need to do this shit with like minded nutters and gf's or dogs aren't cool.
Love your videos, keep up the great work!
LBG guy currently somewhere in Main Land China
Without them you can't see into the water very well at all, so for me they were a game changer!
Looks like a hectic trip, NZ is an amazing country filled with some of the nicest people, hopefully i will get a chance to head over there again and do some fishing.
What an adventure!
Your own vlog channels would be a brilliant step . But please keep uploading those breathtaking films. ;))
Am Frothing over the idea lol. Psycho
So like the US bass fishermen JonB and his mates, what we're going to do is make our own Vlog channels and put out weekly or even daily content (editing a 10min Vlog would take about 1-3 hours). I'll still make these bigger MTF films each time we do a trip, but our day to day fishing isn't being documented and I think Vlogs are the answer to consistent content!
Mad video guys. Very jealous. Will be looking for a 20lb snapper myself from the stones this year, topped out at 14lb last year.
GoPro 3+ Black
GoPro 4 Silver
GoPro 4 Black X2
Knekt Dome with one of the GoPro 4 Blacks (for the water footage on the flats, half in half out of the water)
Sony RX100 V5
DJI Mavic with Polar Pro Polarised filters
Keep it up. I'm hooked!

First thing first, I Love your videos, they always puts a smile on My face while in cold winter weather! Reeally like the way you film the release under water, the accent .
Second, you what kind of rods do you have and what are you using it for? Also, how do you choose size of reel?
Greetings from Sweden!

We chose reel based on what kind of setup we want, so if we're after a lighter Tuna setup we'd go a 4000 - 5500 size Daiwa or 8000 - 14000 size Shimano. If it's heavy GT setup we're after we want more than 15kg drag so while you don't necessarily need more line you need the bigger more powerful reels which is 6500 - 8000 Daiwa and 14000 - 20000 Shimano.
Choosing rod you should reverse engineer what you want to throw... So don't just buy one and then look at the rod rating to work out what lures to use. First know exactly what fish you'll be going for, how heavy the braid is you want to use and how big/heavy the lures are you want to throw and use that info to work out what rod to get.
Hope that helps mate!
FAÇAM UM VIDEO DAQUI !ISSO VAI SER MUITO BOM ! UM ABRAÇO A TODOS !
As always awesome video with great impressions of the fishing and the landscape. Looking foward to the next awesome video by MTF.
Not sure if you checked this out before ..... it will blow your mind .... fly fishing for kings on the south island by sight fishing for stingrays on the flats https://flylife.com.au/featured-articles/golden-bay-kingfish-issue-84-3. Worth a visit when you go to NZ next time.
The second king in our clip (the one that goes crazy on the shore with that stick there) was sight casted off a ray as well! Such a cool style of fishing!
Next level cinematography... next level story telling... next level everything! Amazing production!!!
you boys will be back I'm sure
RICH.... does not come in the form of a pile of $$$$$ bills. These guys are living there lives , much much richer than most with a full bank account.
Keep it up guys , inspirational stuff.
Tight lines and peeling drags.
Tim
I hope you kept one of those kingies for sashimi

It's actually pretty funny at times though, like tonight I just transferred $4.04 from saving to the main account so we had $20 for dinner haha. And to answer your question the way I do it is by living with my mum, so me, my wife and three kids live with my mum in a tiny house, we pay the rates which isn't too much so usually have good $ for food (just kooked it this week).
Cavy has his own granny flat but rent is really psycho and so goes a bit more povo on food. Jonny shares a house so rent a bit more chilled but his work is super on and off depending on clients so there's times when he struggles as well.
It's all good though because what we do have is TIME. Our jobs are flexible hours and we do trips real cheap (flight to NZ were like $150 each way). We have put a lot of coin into Morningtide but it's starting to give back a bit so maybe in a year or so we can focus 100% on this. But either way we're stoked and I think we'd all chose freedom/time over $ any day!
And this is the brown one https://www.facebook.com/On-Top-Lures-1636768606578193/ It's a Local NZ fella making them.
Superb underwater footage and that Drone shot of casting by the Fish was awesome. Never seen a shot like that before anywhere.
Heart Pumping Stuff.

Keep up the great work just a matter of time till this stuff gets the attention it deserves
