Tropical Fish In Koi Pond...Taking Over!!!

Added a few tropical fish into the koi pond this summer, and its seems like they are trying to take over! I catch about 2-3 Middevils (red devil/ Midas Hybrid) every day and remove them from the pond; also 3 African cichlids in there...witch you can see in this video! I've released a Jellyfish in the pond....................... it killed all the fishes.

non-salt water, that's why it seemed dead along with the fish

Great video..do you think I can add a large Texas cichlid into a koi pond?
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS - 6 years ago
Well LA is pretty warm right? A Texas cichlid will tolerate down to about 68°F, under that then its a risk that it could die from too being to cold. If the neighbor has a big enough pond they can try; while Texas cichlids are aggressive, perhaps the peaceful nature of koi will make the texas fell less threatened and show less aggression.

If the temperature is normally above 68°F all year I'd give it a shot...you don't know till you try

I live outside of Los Angeles. My fish is aggressive and I have only been able to keep him alone or her will attack to kill. However, I was once told that he only does that because he is the biggest fish in the aquarium. He is about 12-14" long. Sadly I have to re-home him and a neighbor is offering her koi pond. Any advice?
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS - 6 years ago
It'll probably become aggressive and territorial like my red devil...the male red devil in this video was 10 inches and he would attack my koi who came into his territories. Do you live in a tropical area that keeps warm temps?
Stevo Devo
Stevo Devo - 6 years ago
Do you use heating? Try a sand filtration unit, directly attached to a special bog plant tub/pond, then redirected back through the water fall. Add some water movement via filter heads or what ever, also use a “drop in” high filter rate sponge filter once a fortnight to clear out the sediment. This will clear up our water and make it even possibly drinkable. Grow Sassafras albidum around the pond. This may effect the bacteria levels??
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS - 6 years ago
I don't use a heater in the pond, I bring the tropical fish indoors before the temps drop...I look into that extra filtrations, I'd love to get the pond clearer than this

Africans took over our pond about ten years ago wish I'd had a Go-Pro then: we had some breeds then. The only neat thing we have going now is a community pond. The Clown Knife is lots of fun.

It's very nice that you worry about your fish's happiness. A lot of people in the hobby act like they are collecting antiques instead of (non-human) people. I have a lot of pets and 1 of my favorites is a koi named Fu Manchu.

Nice pond, this might be a dumb question but I wonder how do u control nitrates in ponds? I assume you can't do water changes???
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS - 7 years ago
Thank you, not a dumb question...I do water changes by detaching the hose that leads to the waterfall and allowing the water to spill out the side. I only do it once a month though because I really don't have any problems with nitrites, nitrates or anything like that because the ponds holds a ton of beneficial bacteria

Awesome pond & fish! Are barb's friendly fish? Can they live with lot's of other fish like glowfish or tetra's?
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS - 7 years ago
It depends on the type of barb, tinfoil barbs like the one in the pond get pretty big and will eat tetra and small fish. Other barbs like tiger barbs have reputations for being fin nippers, but I find that if you keep them in large school they play with each other and leave the other fish alone

nice pond there , just a quick question do u think that you  tinfoil barb will survive the winter ? because i'm thinking of putting a fiew tinfoils to my pond what i'm thinking of building .......
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS - 7 years ago
Thank you! I honestly think that the have a chance....of course they are said to be tropical and shouldn't be kept below 76F, but I left mine in my pond until the temps hit 50F and he showed no signs of stress. I didn't want my current 8 incher to be the one who I used to see if they could handle it, but maybe next spring I'll introduce juveniles and see if they can survive. The only thing that worries me is when the pond freeze's over, my koi hibernate...I'm not sure if they will know what to do!

Funny that your video popped up today. I was just thinking about people living in warmer climates if they put cichlids in their Koi ponds. Sure enough here you are. Excellent! I am aware that you are not in one of the warmer climates though. I have also been thinking about putting in a koi pond, so I am looking forward to your subsequent videos.
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS - 8 years ago
Thank You, to my surprise they get along well! The koi are so massive that the cichlids don't think to try to bother them and the pond supplies tons of hair algae for my mbuna...now American cichlids are different...the red devil/midas pair terrorize my koi so I definitely won't add any of them again! I live in NJ so we get hot summers and freezing winters, if that wasn't the case I would have a lot more fish ponds!

Lol...Thank You. As far as food I let them eat koi food, although I've seen the Venustus hunting fry; they also have the choice to eat algae with is pretty much the main diet of the fry. As far as catching them, I have a 3ft wide net that makes catching them super easy, also they choose to sleep in some of the strangest places, so I've already caught about 30 fry sleeping on one of the walls in the shallow section...so catching them really isn't too hard. With other fish like pleco's or cats its much harder....I have to get in the water moving rocks, trying to set traps....that's a head ache! Feel free to ask any questions!

The fish look nice and heathy man. I like when you put the camera under the water to show the fish and the rocks have this build up just like in the lakes. I love it because the fish can nibble on whats on the rocks if they get hungry. Do you cover the pond for the winter. I would put something thats black over the pond because when the sun hits the color black it holds in the heat and keep the pond warm. Thanks man for sharing the video. I always enjoy your videos so keep doing what you doing.
