RE: The first yacht: The newest Lithium batteries are 3 times lighter than lead acid batteries, not 10 times lighter as stated here so is there some new battery or just a mistake of words? And why not switch the main gen from #1 to #2 - 50% of the time - thus giving #1 a break etc? Perhaps every so many hrs like 100 hrs switch? Most of all, when needing as little wind as possible to move the yacht, well, every sailor knows that it is the norm (even when sailing hurricanes) that at sunup and sunset the winds die to their lowest so it amazes me to see people not using that to their advantage with something so very important to do in the low or no wind situations. It's always better to avoid a problem or war than to deal with it or win it at usually a very high and avoidable cost.

The most important thing when building a sailing yacht is to build it from the dead center and lowest point,,, outward equally,,, in all directions. Balance her dead center on a pin Sir and then you have a starting point to progress from. Nothing should be stowed, ALL things should have their place and a place for ALL things. Movable ballast can even be offset if need be. Begin with PROPER Trim and then the ability to rapidly adjust the trim is only the starting position to any good sailing vessel. And yes, it would not be too difficult to even automate the trim adjustments. LIGHT & strong vs STRONG and light! I will be awaiting my check which is surly in the mail :-) Happy seas!

They cannot provide enough power for such a large boat. The hydraulic steering, lighting, navigation equipment, fridges, ovens and other things require 10's of Kilo-Watts of power. Also with solar panels you would have no power at night, and a wind turbine that is powerful enough would be WAY too big and impractical to put on a ship.

Which material to build with.....hhhmmm....Aluminum or Carbon Fiber........What about Rich People! Could we build super yachts out of Rich People? There are tons of them around places like St. Barts, Palm Beach and London. They'd be easy to catch, most of them are older white guys with gout. They don't really add anything to society. All they do is consume things in massive quantities and are more responsible than any other class with killing Planet Earth with their giant carbon footprints.

I like it. Somebody get to work on this idea right away.

+herranton1979 When did I imply the sky is falling? I didn't. I'm just pointing out there's an ever growing class of parasitic rich people. No big deal. We'll be fine. It's just some of us don't like seeing people get rich who didn't earn it. That's all.
;-)
herranton1979
herranton1979 - 8 years ago
+darkmath100 If people break the law, they should be punished for it, I have no issue with that. It is you that lacks perspective though. If you were to be believed, they sky is falling and the country's economic situation is that of just pre-collapse USSR.
darkmath100
darkmath100 - 8 years ago
+herranton1979 The problem is you have no perspective. A very similar thing happened in the 80s with the Saving and Load crisis. Classic "Rent Seeking" Fraud on steroids. Over 1000 bankers went to jail. But this time around when virtually the same thing happened in 2008 ZERO bankers went to jail. They got away with the perfect crime, mostly because people just don't care anymore. It's sad.
herranton1979
herranton1979 - 8 years ago
+darkmath100 Even the short little wiki page YOU linked listed criticism of the theory. You fail to acknowledge the actual issue though. Rent-seeking isn't a new phenomenon. And although it may have grown in recent times, the economy as a whole has grown as well. There may be a higher percentage of "rent-seekers," but they are outweighed significantly by the rich people who develop and innovate, thus creating new wealth. That is why I keep bringing up innovation. It is basically the ultimate opposite of rent seeking. AND the fact that there is MORE innovation now, basically makes your rent seeking argument invalid. Sure, the world might be a better place without them, but we can hold our own with them here. Hell, your wiki page even lists preventing economic bubbles as a "pro" for rent seeking... (I'm not saying it is, I'm just parroting what the wiki page that you cited says)
darkmath100
darkmath100 - 8 years ago
+herranton1979 Controversial? Rent seeking permeates our economy today. The one I'm most familiar with, HFT, is well documented fraud. You know it's a problem when even Forbes is reporting on it: http://www.forbes.com/sites/kitconews/2014/02/06/nanexs-hunsader-seeks-to-save-markets-from-high-frequency-trading/#2160ba214ed7
herranton1979
herranton1979 - 8 years ago
+darkmath100 It isn't a "fact" It is pretty controversial. I am not saying it doesn't exist, just that it isn't quite the issue you seem to think it is. The innovation happening today is proof of that.
darkmath100
darkmath100 - 8 years ago
+herranton1979 Bullshit? I had no idea who owned the superyacht in this video. But sure enough he turned out to be a full on criminal who paid for the yacht by stealing 1 penny from hundreds of millions of people. Theft is theft. I respect rich people WHO'VE EARNED IT. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Steve Jobs etc etc. They're all great men. This dude isn't a great man. And I didn't make up the term "Rent Seeking". It's an economic fact.
;-)
herranton1979

+darkmath100 I call bullshit. The amount of innovation is at an all time high. You are just another person engaging in class warfare just so you have an excuse to hate someone. You would hate your own mother if she made a dollar over what you deem acceptable.

+herranton1979 "every rich person is a thief"......There was once a time in America where the richest actually made things like cars, planes, steel etc. That group is shrinking and is increasingly made up of "Rent Seekers" who add no value and are only there because they're closest to the money spicket on Wall Street. The number of rent seekers people who got rich in Finance has nearly doubled. ;-)

+darkmath100 Sure, but you are making it sound like every rich person is a thief. That is simply not true. At some point in my life I would like to have the means to have a yacht like this (so would most people, dur) and I certainly wouldn't want to be called a thief if I worked hard for my money. In this one, very specific, instance the owner is an asshole, so what? Are you going to take issue with every single customer they have because they aren't Mother Theresa? Building things like this yacht push the design envelope and sometime somewhere a breakthrough is going to be made because a rich person wants something; and 15 years later, we will have something like smartphones. The desire to build better/cooler things is driven by projects like this all over the world. Sometimes that breakthrough leads to real progress. So sure, the owner is an asshat thief, but he still employed over a hundred Non-assholes that can use their imagination and solve problems. So will the next guy that has a yacht built there. So will the rich guy that demands some feature on some technology that make it better for everyone. Don't get so hung up on what others do. Go do something yourself...

herranton1979
herranton1979 - 8 years ago
+darkmath100 I am defending no one. I am simply stating that building that yacht did employ hundreds of people. That is not debatable, it did. How the money was obtained is irreverent. If you feel so strongly that they are hurting people, do something about it. Chastising a poor person in the youtube comment section is like pissing on a forest fire. It does very little except make you sound like an elitist asshole.

+herranton1979 Dear Muppet, the superyacht Marie is owned by one W.E. Bosarge of Quantlab Financial. Quantlab is a High Frequency Trading(HFT) firm. I used to work on a trading floor that did %25 of the daily volume on the NYSE so don't worry I know what I'm talking about. Long story short HFT is legalized Front Running. http://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/frontrunning.asp

Why aren't they shut down if what they're doing is illegal you ask? The answer is simple: LIQUIDITY. Our stock market is so sick if the SEC stopped all HFT the DOW, S&P and Nasdaq would immediately suffer grand mal seizures and implode.
So the SEC does nothing. Not to mention any politician who could do something about it has been bought off.
The result is a Robber Baron like W.E. Bosarge who fleeces Muppets like yourself on a daily basis and you're so stupid you go onto youtube and defend him. It's pathetic.

I do warehouse work moving items weighing tons. The wheel that broke was the kind that could change in direction, if you change direction of overall pull the wheels should all rotate into the new direction. They were pulling hull over pavers outside, if you change direction with a wheel in a crack it will not align to the new direction and be pulled sideways to the pull, this sheer force pulled off the rubber/plastic wheel exterior. It happens.

I found this very difficult to listen to as the sound is quite uneven.  The narrator's voice volume level is much lower than the people who are being interviewed.  Then putting the music on top of that, it becomes a strain to listen to this piece.  Also, six minutes in and I get the feeling this is simply a long infomercial for the shipping company. I won't make it any further.  I am glad that others have found it interesting, but it is a disappointment for me.  I am generally a big fan of documentaries, so it is very rare for me to make a negative comment about one.

Interesting process. Just shows how fragile human inventions are. Most ships can barely support their own weight when not in the water. One little puncture or scrape can destroy a hulls integrity. It should really be the reverse. The strength of the yacht's material should be able to grind the rocks that it may run upon to a pulp and remain undamaged. Engineers still have a long way to go make that kind of strength.

That type of misunderstanding, as well as many other issues of a similar nature may not have occurred in the first place had that wonderful music been mixed at an appropriately lower level. Further, the dialog would be far easier to follow without those awful whooshing sounds heard during transitions. They merely serve to distract and confuse the listener without adding anything of value.
I suggest that modern film producers would benefit greatly by following the examples of their predecessors and keep the dialog in the foreground rather than mixing it as an adjunct to the sound effects and background music.
