Boats have been a fundamental part of many cultures throughout history. Archaeologist evidence suggests that boats have been used around the globe, dating back to prehistoric times. Since then, they have enabled societies from across the globe to communicate and trade with one another – which as ultimately resulted in our global societies. In modern times, boat designs have started develop strange habits and, whilst some of the boats serve function purposes, as will become clear later on in the list, many of the most insane boats in the world are the result of strange artistic projects and creative individuals. It’s widely known that boats come in all shapes and sizes. From small motor boats to luxury yachts, it’s not uncommon to see odd shapes in boat designs, but this first example is definitely a bazaar. The best description to describe it’s shaped would be either a clothes iron or a potato wedge! The Marjata, also known as FS Marjata, was a Norwegian military built, electronic intelligence collection boat – which essentially means, she travelled around international waters collecting intelligence information. The name Marjata has been given to four ships, and the main role of the third vessel is to patrol the international waters around Russia, collecting surveillance of Russian activity. The fourth, which replaced the older ship in 2016, is larger than previous designs. The most iron-shaped-like version of the vessel set sail in 1992. Number 9: The Eclipse When it comes to insane boats, one of the best ways to judge just how insane is its cost. With TV programs like Million Pound Mega Yachts or Britain’s Biggest Super-yachts, it’s hard to escape the mind-boggling sums some people spend on their boats! And this is example is defiantly insane! As the second largest private yacht in the world, it has two helicopter pads – because one is clearly not enough! It has 24 guest cabins, several hot tubs, and other fancy features. It also had three launch boats and a mini-submarine. To keep the boat safe, it has been fitted with a missile detection system – which must be some of the most extreme security for a private boat. It first launched in 2009 as it owned by Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire businessman – because you obviously must be a billionaire to have one of these built for you. In 2011 the ship was valued at $500 million! On a boat… Number 8: Earthrace. Now this is one insane looking boat, and its unusual appearance is one of its most notable features and enables it to pass easily through waves. To help it achieve this are two 540 horsepower multi-fuelled engines. Designed and built specifically to break the record for a powerboat to travel around the globe, which it has successfully ben able to do. Currently, the Earthrace holds the record for after doing the trip in 60 days, 23hours and 49 minutes. This new record was set in June 2008, but later in 2010 the boat was involved in an accident with a Japanese whaling vessel. Thankfully all the crew was rescued with only minor injuries. Now, it’s up to other boat enthusiasts and professionals to try and break this boat’s record. Number 7: Gibbs Aquada. Have you ever wondered what a car boat would look like? Well, this next example is exactly that. The Gibbs Aquada is both a car and a boat designed and created by Gibbs Sports Amphibians. Capable of reaching up to 31 miles per hour on water and 100 miles per hour on land, this boat is available in a number of different designs. Its engine is powerful enough that it can tow a water skier and drivers have excellent control in and out of the water. Of course this amazing amphibious vehicle is not cheap, and a couple of years ago they were selling for around $250,000 which is surprisingly a fraction of their original cost. While this is still expensive, the reduced cost was due to the vehicle not being as successful as the manufactures had hoped it would be. Sounds like a great time to invest in your own! 6: Turanor PlanetSolar The Turanor PlanetSolar is the largest solar powered boat in the world, and it’s definitely odd-looking. It measues 115 feet long and 75 feet wide, and is completely powered by the photovoltaic cells (solar cells to us common folk) which cover the boat’s deck. Fittingly, its name, Turanor, means ‘power of the sun’, and that is exactly how the boat’s batteries charge. The odd design is meant to maximize the surface area for the solar panels, as well as providing basic, cramped living spaces. With a drive to reduce fossil-fuel consumption, maybe this boat will be the sort of design we see a lot more of in the future.
