More than anything learn to properly shift your weight forward to bring yourself back toward the boat once you start to fall back on the wake. Seems like many people's natural tendency is to lean back on the board which causes you to slow down, or "brake" as he mentions. You can get away with leaning back a lot when you have the rope but when you let go you will instantly fall too far back.
DO NOT let go of the rope until you are completely comfortable with keeping slack in the rope, which means you are no longer relying on the rope to maintain your positioning. There's no rush to let go of the rope. I still hang on to the rope while trying different things just so I don't lose my momentum and have to wait for the boat to swing back around to get me.
You need to be proactive with your weight shift over the board. If you feel yourself starting to go toward the back of the wake, already start shifting your weight forward. Don't wait until it's too late. Same with moving toward the boat, be proactive in shifting your weight to slow you down.
