Not worth the trouble in my opinion , great looking fish and rewarding when it goes well. But felt taking care of them was more of a job then a hobby. Very sensitive fish. Easy! Not hard at all. Do your water changes and feed good well foods. Had 6 before this and lost them all to inexperience. Read into a bit, watch those YouTube videos. Get a idea of what your schedule will be like and once you adapted your fish will live long and healthy. Do not be scared. It can’t be over think. I have these guys swimming happily in my tap well water. Discus keeping isn’t like it use to be with only imports. Discus have a bigger range of ph and foods then the imports they use to have. Lots of bredders have been successful in tap water. Give it a try. Don’t cheap out. 6+ quality discus will help the odds I don't want to start anything here but I recently sold one of my angels to a guy who had some stunning angel and discus tanks. They were insanely healthy fish with the rummynose tetras having bright red noses and the discus being of a high quality. I was stunned to find out the discus are all from a local breeder and he keeps them all on tapwater. I should point out that our tapwater generally has around 20-30ppm nitrate so fishkeepers like myself in the area have to do around 80% changes to keep them down. It also has insanely high Gh and Kh being filtered through chalk hills, however the Ph is 7.2. I have always been a person who believed the science and research indicated they need RO water to thrive, but let me tell you, that guy knew his stuff and his tanks spoke for themselves. Tap water, ph of 7.6, I never check gh or kh, tds of 165, I breed and raise fry in the same water. Good filtration, high protein diet, and I do on my main tanks 75% water changes every other day, on my grow outs I do 80% every day. I also keep red head tapajo's and breed them in main tank along side 6 and 7 " discus and trust me the discus do just fine a lot tuffer than people realize and they can be a bit aggressive at times also. They are like any other fish. You want to keep your water as clean and stable as possible. The biggest difference is there’s less wiggle room. If you think the tank will get neglected sometimes, you might want to consider angels instead. Also, they like warm water so finding tankmates can be a challenge. Some fish won’t do well in 84 degree water. Ok to address some comments. I have been in the hobby since I was 10 years old. I have had angel fish before and still do. I am a huge believe in doing research before any purchase and this tank is still 6 months away before I even consider going ahead.
