hello Mark , This makes solution electrolysis fairly dangerous, because water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen. ... The water itself becomes flammable !

Is this the same as an ozonizer? From what I've read they break apart water molecules and the oxygen atoms recombine into O3. Is there any potential for overdosing a tank with ozone?

I dont understand why the water doesnt short circut the two screens. Putting two electrical connections in water should just short everything. Could you explain why this isnt shorted by water? To afraid to try this without knowing it wont electrocute me.

Pure water is a fairly poor conductor. tap water contains trace amounts of compounds which make it able to conduct electricity to some degree but offer some resistance to the flow of electricity. What is crucial is the compounds that are in the water. seawater for example is much more conductive than freshwater. because of the dissolved salt (NaCl) . in seawater - you'll get some hydrogen chloride being formed at the cathode rather than just hydrogen. Also - what you are using for the anode and cathode is important. 316 grade stainless steel will not corrode as easily as many other conductors. Platinum coated mesh is even better but more expensive.

The phone charger is a transformer and only 12 volts so no chance of that.

Hi. You probably used galvanized metal. You need to use stainless steel mesh ok.

Mark,
Question? I built one of these and submerged it to test it outside my tank in a bucket. It almost immediately started turning the water orange. Left plugged in for a couple hours I had a dark brownish greenish sludge floating on the top. Any idea what is going on?

MARK'S AQUATICS - 6 years ago
Ah! You must have used normal metal mesh. You need to use stainless steel mesh. When you use normal mesh and run the current through it will break down the mesh to rust .

btw, to me knowledge, its not sterilzing anything... its creating ozone, adding oxygen to the water... nothing more, again, not worth the risk.
chefdan87
chefdan87 - 5 years ago
Whats the risk?
j rich
j rich - 6 years ago
Chris Locke it’s not adding anything

It’s electrolysis which breaks water H2O into its base components H (hydrogen) and O (oxygen)

Oxygen does have a cleaning effect which is why Hydrogen Peroxide is used on cuts and abrasions
Chris Locke
Chris Locke - 6 years ago
yikes, man... unonown paint, unknown plastics, unknown metals, glues, AND electricity all in your tank?? definitely not worth all those risks, buddy... in my opinion only.

Hi, thank you very much for sharing your idea, I make one and now the question came.....
I tested in an vase and water became brown-ish sort of, maybe the grill I use is not good?
How will affect the shrimps?
My tds is 180, it vill do the job this twinstar?
Can I use an 5v/500amp phone charger?
Many thanks for your help!!!

@Gary Read One of the benefits of living in Holland, they use uv not clorine!
Gary Read
Gary Read - 6 years ago
Bradley Fortner o3, ozone, it breaks the electron bond, leaving a two single atoms with a spare electron, making them bond with the first o2. They meet making. Mainly highly reactive o3, but some small amount of o1, that is dangerous to organic life, as it is what we call a free radical. Both the very small amount of free radicals and the unstable o3 will react with anything with a free electron space. In some European countries they use a combination of ozone and uv to clean and sterilise there tap water, leaving no trace.
Saddly we haven't catched them up, and because of cost of initial outlay, would rather pay more to poison our water with chlorine, and industrial waste from the aluminium and nuclear industry in a form of hydrofluoric acid, they pass off as fluoride, that would cost them billions to dispose of.
Sorry to go off topic, really pisses me of that we do this, instead of using ozone

It's actually just destroying the water by reducing it to it's basic elements. The oxygen and hydrogen simply escape through the surface. The bubbles popping at the surface will oxygenate your tank water, just like your pump/filter already does. But, as far as sterilization goes, I have no idea how water being destroyed sterilizes the water that hasn't been destroyed yet. If it even does. I think these things are just gimmicks personally.

So essentially, it's creating MORE oxygen, and not stripping oxygen out?
Reg Pollock

Water = H2O. The sterilizer breaks down the molecule (electrolysis) to H2 (hydrogen gas reduction at the cathode) and O2 (oxygen thru oxidation at the anode). This means it actually consumes the WATER itself (in VERY VERY tiny amounts), so in principle only your water line should diminish.

MARK'S AQUATICS was you getting a sooty build up in the water?
I thought of doing it to, but because I didn't know what alloy they used, that wouldn't put a high metal content in the water and soot. It used to only take 20 minutes using silver bars, to make distilled water carry enough nano particles to work as an anti microbial. Never used antibiotics since. But there was a lot of soot, and I wonder if this stainless steel will cause any problems.

It occurs to me Mark that one of those seive meshes (assuming they are made of stainless steel) could be covered in moss and suitably holed to make a lovely big dome for shrimp to hide in. I think they can be bought in smaller sizes too. If unsuitable for shrimps they could be used in a community tank for the catfish.

Hi. the phone charger is only six volts so no chance of a shock. Its the same voltage as a six volt battery for a torch, the safest way is to use the battery if your not sure about chargers. It adds oxygen and hydrogen to the water this has a sterilising effect killing algea spores and pathogens .

I can get past electricity in water. How does that not shock you? Very interesting. Does it add oxygen to the water or just sterilize it? You're so full of ideas!
