I have had a Hobie Outback 2011 for about 7 years, I have enjoyed using it. But, I think I am getting a little to old for the weight and heavy lifting it up onto my truck's roof rack and no room to store a trailer. The new ones look nice. I just can't see paying so much for a new one that is just a giant piece of plastic. The hull gets scratched up way to easily (probably true on all kayaks not just Hobie). I wish they would put a Kevlar, carbon fiber or some other tough coating on the bottom in the areas that count. A few scratches and you lose a lot of speed and efficiency. But, then I am not an engineer, there probably is a good reason nobody has done this yet (referring to the Kevlar or carbon fiber....maybe to easily damaged by UV light, won't bond to the plastic, etc.?). I think I could figure out a way to justify the current cost, if it had a superior, scratch proof bottom. lol

What about the huge amount of water getting into the hull when going thru the surf.
Or this is not a sea kayak? issue reported by many new users of 2018 Hobie outback.
What do you recommend to fix the leaking from the hatch?

I looked at these, then I bought a Gregor Aluminum fishing boat and put a new Yamaha 20 hp on it. The total package, boat, trailer, and motor weights about 500 lbs and could be towed with almost anything. Oh and did I mention I can cruise 20 miles in one hour in case the fish are biting at a different location in the lake?

I ditched my Hobie for a nice half cabin fibreglass boat with 50hp for maybe $1300 of your U.S. dollars in preference to loading the cumbersome Hobie onto my roof racks. That said, it's really a case of what the individual wants and is willing to spend. None of the other brands seem to be as tidy nor proven as Hobie designs. I've owned a PA14, three Outbacks and a Revo and enjoyed them all. My only gripe was the weight, which is unavoidable. The price is high, but you are also making an investment as they hold their value well and also once you have upgraded your Hobie the spending can come to an end, whereas a boat will always cost money in fuel, lubrication and constant maintenance. I can honestly say I do miss the freedom and simplicity of kayaks.

Folks like you complain about ANYTHING that "costs over 500 bucks". Not everyone has a bum dead-end low paying job either. And for anyone making the lame comment "I can buy a nice used boat, motor and trailer for that price" is also smoking birdseed.......because I know from experience: USED OUTBOARDS & BOATS immediately require tons of money for repairs. That's exactly why most of them are put up for sale "so cheap". You'll have double the money in it within 6 months, and it STILL won't be right. In THIS life......you get what you pay for. I wouldn't trade my Twin Troller X-10 for the Blue Sky 360.......but I will say: if the Twin Troller was "never invented & produced".......I would take this Blue Sky 360 over ANY kayak on the market today. No disrespect or "hate" meant against you whatsoever......but for crying out loud, we can hear your butt cheeks squeaking from here. "Cheap" equals JUNK 90% of the time IN THE REAL WORLD.

I love hobie kayaks. This one look sick! I don't know how much it costs. They used too cost 1800 brand new before vantage seat. There is a point were a kayak gets too expensive and for a 1000 or 2000 more you could get a nice boat. I think that the point I'm at. A heavy roof top.kayak without a trailer is a real challenge too do for a fishing trip and I find myself doing it less and less
John Griffin

at the same point. It comes to the point when I go kayaking im bringing 3 kayaks, for my girlfriend and whoever else is coming, about to get a trailer. Then I thought if I am going to get a trailer then might as well get a damn boat.

Compass is 34" wide, 2019 Outback also 34" and fully rigged weight of over a hundred pounds, 2017 Outback 33".  Here is an article in where the owner claims his 2012 Outback weighs 62 pounds without the pedal drive, with it add 6.2 pounds. Still under 70 pounds. add an inch add 30 Plus pounds? But the Quest is still 28.5" and weighs 65.5 pounds. So again tell me why we need these big fat bassing yaks with peddle drive?  The cost is prohibitive compared to a composite or thermo formed boat. I am trying to wrap my mind around the Pro Anglers price versus its 1990's rotomold technology. Even Hurricane can come out with a lighter version peddle drive boat. Come on Hobie quit resting on your laurels and make something beside peddle drive Barca Loungers, some people would like to get somewhere a little quicker without the over bloated tank of a thing you call a kayak. Keep in mind you still have to be able to load and unload these boats, and hopefully you never have to do a one man carry to the water. is the next generation going to have retractable wheels?  Because the average person may need them.
AG Coarseman
AG Coarseman - 6 years ago
Hardly. An inch wider and 1,5 kg heavier is not that much.

Howabouthetruth Mate, I think you need to get your facts straight first before replying.
Let me help ya here:

1. The kayak in question was not a PA, it was an OB and the guy simply forgot to close the back hatch. The hatch does not come loose by itself, I can assure you.
2. The yak did not sink completely, if that was the case they would have been unable to rescue it as they did.
3. It is better to have one boat to fish everywhere instead of two-one for freshwater and another for the sea. This is what an OB accomplishes.
4. I’d be very grateful if you could show me a video of that boat you talk about at choppy sea, I am really interested.
Howabouthetruth
Howabouthetruth - 6 years ago
See my main response to you........I forgot THIS video is about the Hobie........yet I STILL refer to the dangers of ANY kayak, INCLUDING the Hobie's. WATCH THE VIDEOS I just recommended about "kayak rescues" and then go try to argue your nonsense with THEM.
Howabouthetruth
Howabouthetruth - 6 years ago
Who here said anything about "going out to sea"??? ONLY YOU. Furthermore, if you think the Blue Sky 360 or ANY kayak "can't be dangerous" in the ocean........then I invite you to see the videos right here on youtube: "Kayak Rescue".........and one of those kayaks was a Hobie Pro Angler 14........one of the hatches came loose on the guy, and his kayak SUNK LIKE A ROCK. I also invite you to visit Chad Hoover's ( Chad is a kayak guru, and heads up the biggest kayak bass fishing tournaments ) youtube channel & see the recent video/interview he did with a man who nearly died from hypothermia AND drowning, simply because his fishing kayak IN A LAKE got tangled IN FISHING LINE. He went to take off, and simple fishing line under water caused his kayak to capsize. THAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE WITH THE TWIN TROLLER. So don't even try to blow smoke about "the Twin Troller looks suicidal at sea".........a total pipe dream of yours. 2 large men CAN'T capsize the Twin Troller if they tried. Plenty of video footage shows that demonstration. I've owned mine for nearly 2 years now, and I actually stand on the side rail to take a wizz over the side. TRY THAT WITH ANY KAYAK. The Twin Troller is even safer than a large jonboat, because even large jonboats capsize VERY easily. The viewer was asking about "safety to bring along his 5 year old child".......and you will NOT find a small boat anywhere near as safe as the Twin Troller, pure & simple. Lastly, this video shows the Blue Sky 360 SET UP FOR FRESH WATER BASS FISHING........So spare me with your nonsense.
AG Coarseman
AG Coarseman - 6 years ago
Howabouthetruth For sea fishing that boat looks suicidal.
Howabouthetruth
Howabouthetruth - 6 years ago
AFORWW............Psst.......Ya want TOTAL & ABSOLUTE SAFETY for kids, stability, and maneuverability like NO other small boat at ANY price.........check out the Twin Troller X-10. The ONLY TRUE 100% "hands-free fishing" in the industry. I've owned mine for going on 2 years now, and I can honestly say, on a performance AND dollar for dollar basis......it's the best investment I ever made in any fishing vessel.........barr none. And I've owned a lot of various water craft, from canoes all the way up to 2 nice bass boats. Sold factory direct only, to cut out all the dealer over-head. The dog gone thing will last a lifetime, with near zero operating costs & maintenance. Every video you see about the TT is spot-on accurate....and then some. I am in no way affiliated with the company........just a super satisfied owner. Far more comfortable & spacious, 2 anglers can stand or sit on killer seats that spin 360 degrees, and 2 large men can't capsize the Twin Troller if they tried. Modify the boat any way ya like. The possibilities for mods are near endless. Great company too, and tons of owner reviews. I have yet to see anyone complain about it in any way. I wouldn't trade mine for anything, and I'm about as hardcore as you can get for trophy bass fishing here in Florida. I carry 8 baitcaster rods laid completely flat and out of the way, 4 in each side tray. The trays are so deep, NO rod straps necessary........even in choppy water when using my outboard. Plenty of room for tackle and cooler too. Plus your accessories. Check em out.......you'll be glad you did.

AG Coarseman
AG Coarseman - 6 years ago
AFORWW Judging how Hobie made the rear cargo area bigger than 2016, you must be a minority. You can take a passenger on the 2019, but Hobie wont sell you a seat to put there probably because they think the length is not enough to guarantee the safety of two persons, so you do it at your own risk.
SaltwaterRook

+AG Coarseman A tandem, I never should have thought about that...Of course I looked at tandems. Seems a pretty obvious choice. However, I don't want the length and weight of a tandem because guess what? Sometimes I'm solo! By design, it's got plenty of room on the rear deck. Some of us can catch fish without a giant fucking box of shit behind us.

We will have this on location on September 8th at our Dania Beach store. We are taking pre-orders for the stock we have coming in. Our Hobie rep is bringing the kayak straight from Surf Expo and then taking it with him. So the ONLY chance to test this out will be September 8th until we get our stock in the stores.
