Alright, I just made mine with lava rock! I'm cycling the filter getting ready for a little pearlscale goldy next week! I'm so stoked! No room left in my 30 gallon- I have a fantail and a black moor. If this does as well as I'm hoping maybe I won't even need to upgrade the filter! God bless you!

@ The King of DIY: Thanks for the idea. How do you get Maximum water flow rate in this setup (or in any other air driven filter) ? I tried this and I fond that only air bubbles are coming out at the top. I think we need filtered water flowing out from the top.

yes make sure it's submerged media if you make this kind of filter or make any filter that work completely underwater and also some media is made for different things Also other media won't move like the plastic so they will just sink in the bottle but that's also good for lightly planted tanks

If you are already using a bottle with a larger opening, could you not just drill a 1" hole in the top of the bottle and stick it on top of a sponge filter to add bio filtration? I am actually looking for a video of someone doing this as I already have a sponge filter, and have a bag of K1. If I don't find a video, I will just give it a try.

how cool thanks in the process of making a sky tower for my fish to rise above the water surface of the tank and go up a foot for a birds eye view it i have two big oscars way fun takes several days for the fish to feel safe once they do they go way up to look down. i love messing with tanks love it you came up with this just checked amazon they have this 1 Gallon (3.8 Liters) Kaldnes K1 Filter Media i am going to give your idea a try thanks for the video. cheers

+Aaron Hale They are filter media, so all the beneficial bacteria for the nitrogen cycle grows on them. Also they are used for cleaning the water as it travels through them, which is going to help get you clearer water.

Sure. Filters don't directly add oxygen though, it's the surface movement they create which aids in gas exchange.

You don't need a cap with holes in it. Water coming in prevents the k1 coming out (I've been running mine 6 months) when the pumps off it floats to the top of the bottle.

Try a larger air pump, I tried mine at first with a small air pump with small success. got a bigger pump and problem solved. 2 years+ later and it's still going strong..

Seems like a lot of extra work and hassle. Works fine as it is. Also my fish like to browse the sponge picking up bits of food stuck on the sponge and my plec feeds on the algae that the sponge collects. if it aint broke don't fix it.

It doesn't matter running or not you don't need the cap. It is just unnecessary was my point. For the first week i never used anything, no filter sponge or top i just let it run cut my cycle time drastically. Put a filter sponge on after a week and never looked back. It has saved my bacon twice already, once when my external filter packed in and it coped on its own until i got a new one and the other time during a power cut. I had a battery operated pump in case you wondered lol

Oh I found the solution to this...it's use better suction cups lol. The suction cups I was using were crap, so I put in a couple from some broken veggie clips. They're smaller but stronger. It stays down and has been working awesome! One of my harlequin rasboras loves swimming back and forth through the bubble XD super cute :)

Hi King of DIY, i have a 5-6" silver arowana in my 2x1x1 tank, he's all alone in there and i made a filtration just like what you did here in this video (bottle 16oz with ceramic rings). Just wanna ask for how long can my aro survive with this kind of filtration? (my aro is already here in my tank for almost 3weeks with the simple filtration) And i will move my aro into a bigger tank 6x2x2 when my aro reaches 12" to 14" and by that time i plan to make 2pcs of simple filtration in it one with ceramics rings and the other with k1 media is that ok? (bottle size both 1liter or 1.5liters) will these filtration be good enough for my aro? or do i still need to put another kind filtration system? which is i'm trying to avoid because of high electricity bill (25watt for a small filtration system from my LFS), coz air pump is way too cheaper regards with the electricity bill (only 3watt for my air pump)..

Don't bother! Carbon/charcoal isn't recommended, as it starves bacteria out of nitrites/ammonia. Then after 2 weeks, leeches the ammonia/nitrites back into the aquarium.

Avoid using carbon at all costs!!

anyone having trouble getting their K1 to move around simply give it a few days. Mine was completely still to start with but after 4 or 5 days it's all moving just like in the video. Also UK people you can get the white round K1 media from Nautilus aquatics in spring green nursery, Crofton, wakefield. It's where I got mine from.

Top tip Joey. Thank You. Although it's surplus to requirements I now run 2 of these in my main tank for 2 reasons.

1• The movement of the media makes it possibly the best way of 'speed-seeding' a new tank

2• In the event of a power outage I have 2 matured bio-filters that can each be powered by a battery air pump.

For even less drilling, wrap a broad strip of sponge around the airline until it fits snugly in the neck of the bottle.

Sounds like mineral deposits. If your tank is glass it can easily be removed with a wet scourer made for non-stick cookware. Do not use wire wool as glass will scratch a lot easier than most people think. Whether it is good or bad for fish depends on the quality of your local water and the type of fish you are keeping. If the white marks are severe I would consider investing in a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system and using a mix of RO/Treated tapwater. The exact ratio also depends on many factors.

If you have fish in your tank DO NOT go straight from tapwater to RO water. Acclimatise them to it via a series of 10% water changes. Leave a couple of days between each change and monitor your fish carefully for signs of distress.

Lego gears MIGHT work in a big enough container with enough air, but why would you want to use anything else? K1 has perfect bouyancy, and a fairly good surface area which is also designed to maximise movement. the only way I could think of improving on it would be if somebody invented a spherical version with the same bouyancy - I suspect that wouldn't be too difficult for someone with a 3D printer but it would cost a lot more than K1.

The price per litre is less than that of diesel and WAAAY less than that of inkjet ink and will last a hell of a lot longer than either of them.

Great video, i have recently got interest in having an aquarium at home. I installed a small aquarium. But i almost lost 2 black moore, 3 gold fish. Now i have got new three angel fish and a common gold fish one. My filter is the normal, which i got along the tank. it has the bottom sponge with top motor head. I was also wondering, how much of the filtration capability comes from the addition of the air to this type of filter? I should clarify the one I jury-rigged myself was a static as opposed to a moving bed type of filter. Does a moving bed filter with an airline work more like a wet/dry filter? All I really know about filtration is moving water past bacteria.

Could you use any high-flow media for this type of filter? What if instead of a bubble lift, you hooked a small power head to it? I had to make an improptu fry tank and filter and I used a 12 oz drinking bottle + a small Rio 85gph along with some alternating layers of sponge + Fluval ceramic rings. I went kind of lazy and just stuck the intake of the rio head into the mouth of the bottle but it definitely has more filtering power than one of those cheap hang-on filters for small tanks.

Hi there Joey. Love your videos and what you do, very informative stuff! One thing I want to run by you is that I had a moving bed filter in the same design as yours and it worked amazingly. The only problem was due to the light on my aquarium my k1 media turned green over time instead of the yellow / brownish colour they meant to go. Therefore should the k1 be protected from bright light or how else could this be avoided. Your help would be highly appreciated thanks. Paul

Because the air shooting out of the air tube is going straight up (because air is made up gases) and so when this happens it drives the water in the same direction causing the water below to come up through the holes in the cap.

This is also good for a planted aquarium, because it has no chemical media that will adsorb nutrients as well as metals that the plants use. Because i heard that plants do part of the filtering anyways. So that's a great filter, nice work.

This may sound funny but you can also use toy Legos. but use very small ones. I have done this in my bio-filters b4 and it dose work. Or you can use the green scrub pads the kind with out the soap in them only. I have use them b4 in hang on back filters also.

iv got 3 tanks and in all three the filter have ceramic ring. there a higher grade than plastic so buy them. hope that helps

Hey I used a two liter bottom and added two slots for two air pump tubes to go into. The only thing is it appears that at the top of the two liter the water isn't cycling, it's just releasing air. I can see the water but there is airbubbles at the top (i believe) is there still water cycling?

for small tanks plastic media sucks. you need a large bioload and it takes a while for bacteria to colonize. i would suggest using this design, but using ceramic rings, pack it to the top, and have the air agitate the rings. this should work well.

Someone mentioned straws and got me thinking.. well first off straws would be pretty much pointless for one, theyre too smooth for bacteria to adhere to.. but what about a straw stuffed with like that porous blue filter stuff cut to fit inside? Yes I tried that over the reg box filter (hate sponge filters)but they are so tiny. I thought your idea with the bottle and sponge on bottom would be perfect. I have 2 of them going in the 10 gal tanks. I have an angelfish explosion happening - so looking for something that I can use for a while. I am breeding angel fish & haven't found anything yet that will keep the babies from being sucked up. I built a few of these last night & added seeded ceramic beads from main tank, some carbon/floss.Wondering if you think it will be effective enough to raise the babies until they are too big enough. I have 2 of these filters in a 10 gallon tank. I would think that the water would be clearer than it is - so am a little concerned. Please let me know what you think. thanks

Hi Uarujoey...This works great...just got mine up and going yesterday...it can also be used manually as a moving filter to suck up poo and what not. saves siponing time. I use charcoal on the bottom of the bottle and filter floss on the top of that to catch the goop. I live near B.C. Canada...Via Spokane Valley. I would suggest using the drill and not a knife to poke the holes! We all have unhappy accidents! I've had my new tank set up 45 days and the nitrates remain extremely high!

gravel wouldn't work because it has nothing for the beneficial bacteria to grip on and would be grounded up against the moving gravel giving it little chance to survive. The K1 has small holes like caves for the bacteria to live and produce. This is only my guess and assumption seeing as to how bacteria lives and thrives in my experience.
