Noo, I used the clear silicon only for the steel (from outside), then only black silicon for the glass together
its totally different area

interesting build. Gluing two pieces together seems odd when a 12mm piece would work fine .
Silicone bonds better to glass than it does to stainless steel, so i dont believe that it is a better joint.
i have worked with aquariums my whole life, and have never seen this method before. i would advise caution if building a tank this way!
ReefAmorous
ReefAmorous - 7 years ago
two pieces together makes 90 angle degree, the silicon bonds with two edges with walls
the stainless steel makes extra support from out side and it's not related to joint the glasses together.

as far as i knew in 40 plus years of having aquariums, there is no pressure on the bottom glass as it transmits its pressure to whatever is below it , of course if you are stupid enough not to have a perfectly flat surface below it then you get what you deserve
ReefAmorous
ReefAmorous - 7 years ago
+Steve Dodd its about the walls where they met the bottom, its not about the buttm it self!

hello sir, sir I have just build a 40g aquarium using 8mm glass and I let the silicone dry for 2 days but when I started filling water the side glass and the back glass started to develop a gap between them I also applied glass glue to attach them but of no use sir can you please suggest me any solution and can 8 mm glass sustain the pressure ? and hi to your daughter she is an angel.

ReefAmorous
ReefAmorous - 7 years ago
+Arpan Chandel Its hard to judge how to fix it without seeing your tank, anyway 8mm glass can hold a 40galons tank, but i think the problem could be the silicone itself not suitable for glass and fish tank, i recommend you to reassemble the tank again and make sure to use good silicone.

Good job man!
One question
Wouldn't the silicone between the two bottom panels create pressure points when the tank is full? It might crack!!!
James Stapay
James Stapay - 7 years ago
I thought that also. Of course the silicon in thick dabs creates an air gap between the two plates. Not sure how you could coat the entire plate of glass before putting them together, but that would be the way to eliminate the air gaps.
Matte Edström
Matte Edström - 7 years ago
But WHY?
100 gallon is about 378 liters.
I can buy a 375 liter aluminum framed tank for about $400!
How much did you pay for the time and material you put into that?
The one i buy, comes with warranty for 2 years^^

And now i'm talking store prices.
I can buy it from my friend, who owns a petstore, for $280
ReefAmorous
ReefAmorous - 7 years ago
+Matte Edström
I bought this frames about 25$, buying a ready tank in our countries is too expensive becouse all are imported from out side, so buying the raw materials and do it by your self is much cheaper, this setup including tank, sump, stand and Canopy cost me around 300$.
The other thing, Do it your self is enjoyable hobby for me.
Thanks for your comments and watching.
By the way i can guarantee this tank for 10 years ;)

ReefAmorous Hey has the floating bottom caused a problem for you? And do you have a way to kinda correct it?
ReefAmorous
ReefAmorous - 7 years ago
+Matt Lewis yes this is true, I think about this from the beginning, but the issue is minor as the bottom floated around 1 or 2 mm and can be supported by polystyrene under the tank.
