My question is actually about the heater! I use that brand in all my tanks and always have it diagonal like the instructions say. How does it perform vertical? Saves a lot of space for sure.

The wall is slate. You can buy tiles of slate that are cut in 12"x12" squares. Then you just break it up with a hammer and rinse it all in hot water. I have some in my tank. Super cheap and looks great.
