Tank should be the most expensive part. I work in my local fish store and im also a student. It depends on what your local fish store is like :) mine sells 5 plants for a tenner which is more than enough to grow a good scape in your tank. we sell our root and wood by weight so it should cost only a couple a quid for a little piece. the best way though would be to buy your plants and grow them a little bit before using them in aquascaping

Don't put any fish inside the thank until it's been 3/4 weeks at least, unless you use water from another tank. The water has to been cycle.

He also has used very hardy plants as java fern and moss, but if you plant other types of plants you'll need a CO2 supply.

I have set up dozens of tanks on first try, and have never had them die. I just put conditioner in a container, filled it up, poured it in, arranged everything, rinsed the filter, and two hours later I would have all of the fish in.

Cycling isn't NECESSARY as long as you know what you're doing. It is RECOMMENDED. It gets me angry when I see comments like these saying that the fish will just immediately die or some shit. Not true.

+James Mclean Not required but recommended everywhere I've seen, just so that you don't harm the fish while the cycle is going on. But you can use Tetra safe start to make it go faster and then you can add fish right away.

+Viviana Pineda plants are natural filters. They eat ammonia & nitrites. Research the nitrogen cycle. You need to allow time for your beneficial bacteria to grow. However plants aid in safeguarding your fish. Once planted & planted heavy, dont add fish for the 1st 2 weeks. Then add fish slowly. Add them by the pairs weekly. Starting up a new tank is a pain. I know, cuz you cant add fish right away. Definitely do not do it in 48 hours, as no bacteria would build up by then and your fish will die. 2 weeks minimum.

set it up put water in with the conditioner daily (ask pet shop) every day. in 4 days it will be ready (add slowly, start with hardy fish)

+James Mclean Hello. So, for a new tank (filter and heater added, tap water treated, plants in) can I start putting fish in? I am so confused. One pet store said wait 48 hours, another said 4 weeks but I am not sure how to build the correct environment or how long to wait? Thanks for any help

I think you mean 3-4 days, mine used normal water, pretty much same size, introduced with same fish. Only 3-4 days with the right chemical supplements to start the process is all it takes.

The cycling process is the build up of beneficial bacteria to break down ammonia to nitrites. The bacteria isn't found in the water but on the surface of objects withing the tank and the filter media. So if there is seeded filter media, fish can be added immediately to the tank.

as far as I know it is not suitable for all types of planted aqua, but here it's a low tech one with no carbon dioxide emission, and he's using pretty strong plant such as java ferns which require no strong light to grow... :)
