got my 90 gal tank last night, have not had a tank for over 16 years .
Never had goldfish before.
Got any good hints and tips, for a newbie ..
Thanks in advance
from my experience comets grow a minimum of 10 inches in less than 2 years, and are very strong swimmers.
they do very well in ponds.
I hope this doesn't shock you too much but full grown comet goldfish, in my opinion, need a minimum of 80 gallons per fish. i personally fell its better with something like 100 gallons per fish.
7 comets will very quickly outgrow a 55 gallon tank. if they stay smaller, this is due to stunted growth, because of not enough gallons per fish, not allowing them to live to their full potential.
in your situation, because you have 7 comets, which means a lot of gallons, i would recommend getting a pond if you can, since that would be a cheaper option.
if you cant upgrade, you could also re home them to a good home.
whatever you decide, just remember that comet goldfish get to an average of 12 inches in 2 years,
are very fast swimmers,
are huge waste producers,
are more intelligent than meets the eye,
and can easily live well over 25 years in good conditions.
all this means that they do require large amounts of water.
hope this helped, and good luck with your fish :)
Do we need heavy maintenance for goldfish
They produce lots of wast....
You might want to feed your fish something other then the
Hikari stuff…
You are paying a premium for some of the cheapest
ingredients, like soy and corn.
May I suggest Omega One Goldfish pellets, which cost about
the same as the Hikari and has much better ingredients.
This food contains no corn or soy flour. It does however
contain lecithin, which is derived from soy.
I have been feeding Omega One Goldfish for a while and my
goldfish love it.
Just for clarification, I am not being paid by Omega One to
say this, I am just a customer who likes their fish food.
Hikari only says it uses fish meal, but it doesn’t specify
what fish are used.
Omega One says what fish it uses.
The fact that the Hikari food contains DL-methinine suggests
that the fish meal they use is of poor quality. If they were using good quality
fish they wouldn’t need to add this.
This is something the cat and dog food industry has been
adding for years because they too use inferior meat products in their foods as
well.
You might as well be feeding your fish cat food…
Hikari also just says “vitamins and minerals” but doesn’t
specify which are being used.
Omega One tells you everything they use.
Here’s a breakdown of the two fish foods’ ingredients so you
can decide for yourself.
Hikari Goldfish Gold Ingredients:
Fish meal, flaked corn, wheat flour, soybean meal, krill
meal, gluten meal, enzyme, DL-methionine, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, garlic,
monosodium glutamate, and vitamins and minerals including stabilized Vitamin C.
Omega One Goldfish Ingredients:
Whole Salmon, Whole Herring, Whole Shrimp, Wheat flour,
Wheat Gluten, Fresh Kelp, Lecithin, Astaxanthin, L-Ascorbyl-2-Phosphate (Source
of Vitamin C), Natural and Artificial Colors, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3
Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin, Niacin,
Pantothenic Acid, Folic Acid, Biotin, Inositol, Tocopherol (Preservative),
Ethoxyquin (Preservative).
Veil-tail goldfish need an aquarium with a minimum of 1,2m in lenght since they can grow up to 30cm a piece. Normal goldfish are even more demanding and require 3+ meters in lenght in order to have enough swimming room. Normal goldfish can grow over 40cm a piece. A veil-tail goldfish can reach an age of 20+ years easily when held in an proper aquarium like this one. A medium to large pond with 1m+ in depth is also suitable for goldfish.
Fish bowls and small aquaria are pure torture for (veil-tail)goldfish because they don't provide the proper amount of room for swimming. The goldfish adjust their size to their surrounding but the internal organs keep growing which kills the fish eventually when held in a bowl or aquarium too small.
A lot of people don't realize this when buying goldfish in the stores. Please spread the word.

Class B and C are pretty much the same but there's a speed difference due to a slightly large size in class B and a lack of Dorsal fin for the class C guys. It's generally acceptable to keep B and C type together, just make sure the C guys get sufficient food.
Class B would be the Double fin Fancy class consisting of Orandas, Ryukin, Fantails, and Telescopes. Class C fish have no dorsal fin and consist of Ranchus, Lionheads, Celestial Eye, and Egg fish.
Last thing to keep in mind is that although not mandatory, it's generally good practice to make further distinctions between Telescope eye, bubble eye, and celestial eye Goldfish due to the fragile nature of their sight. A big 12 inch oranda bumping into a 5 inch Bubble eye might be an issue so good judgement should be incorporated when stocking a Goldfish tank. Okay
also snails also make a good choice.
You know, you're probably right, these Goldie's of mine I rescued from a neighbour, filthy tank with poor filtration, they've been deprived of all food and nutrition until they came to me. I have tried many times with live plants with no success so far, if I fail the next time I think I'll just have to face facts that plants are a no go with these greedy Goldies, but its not like they're not fed enough or not fed a nutritional varied diet because they are, maybe its more psychological? idk? they remember faces and feeding times, what if they remember they was once starved. Btw I use gravel in my goldfish, sand is a pain to keep clean, I've got 5 other tanks with sand bottoms lol plus this tank is only temporary until our pond is built.
To feed my goldfishes with green, I hang a piece of boiled lettuce with a clothespin on the window of my tank so that they can eat it without it gets lost. (By the way, sorry for my english, I'm French)
the only issue would be the fact they need wood in their diet.
Side question. On your filter floss how often do you replace it?
Next video the planted tank? :)
And the ability to see a tank of this size with goldfish is not really something that you can find anywhere. 20 or so adult goldfish in an appropriate tank would be pretty amazing (imo).
He feeds ok and everything but inbetween he just lies still, not moving at all while the other fish in the tank are fine and normal.
Any ideas?
Yeah i think you guys are right, i just found it odd that he was fine for so long. I"ll give him to my friend to put in his goldfish pond, maybe he"ll be happier in there.
Yeah mate i did think of that but his fins seem ok to me and he was usually the bully in there haha.
I water change once a week and it`s a 65 litre tank
I"ll try that , thanks again
It can be sick, maybe do some water changes?
What's the size of your tank?
+butts
Oh ok, cheers for the reply.
I`ve had them together in the tank with the same feed for a long time, almost a year, with no problems?
No, not tested it yet.
I do a water change every week and use "pure aquarium" balls for the filter. All the other fish are behaving good and seem happy, it`s just him?
He`s a fancy and he`s the only goldfish in there, it`s a 65 litre tank and he shares it with one platy, 6 guppies and 4 neon tetras.
He is usually very active and now he is so still and almost hiding in the tank, so odd?
I've never known a tank to take longer than a month cycling, although it depends on your water chemistry, the media you're using, the flow rate of your filter, and a handful of other variables. The key is to remain patient through the whole thing, and not screw around trying to add fish too early.
And leave the lights off while the tank cycles, or even cover it with a blanket. That'll prevent a serious algae outbreak at the outset.
