You do need R.O water if don't want a hair algae problem. It would be a nice looking tank, if it wasn't for the hair algae.

Tap water wtf?? Lol. I can't get over how much growth u have yet u seem to be doing the opposite to how we are told. Take your green hair algae problem. Sure sign of high phosphate yet your tanks thriving. What's your phosphate level and water parameters in general? Also I'd really love to know exactly what make and model your lighting is thanks!!

Hi. I'm planning to get a 240-250 litre (50/55ish) gallon reef tank. I want to put it in my upstairs bedroom as it's only place I have space for it.

My question is will there be any risk with the weight of the tank plus water plus I've sand and live rock??

With the amount of money involved particularly with reef tanks last thing I want is to splash out on it all and it causes the floor to give way. As it would not be fair on my wallet or the fish that I buy.

Any advice would be welcome. Trying to avoid the 500-1000 pound survey engineer cost

Your tank is awesome!! Have u ever tried using urchins for hair algae? My tank is covered in green hair algae and someone suggested urchins for it. I have a snowflake eel in my tank, so I have to watch what herbivores I can put in it.. All my crabs have disappeared
Chris Henry
Chris Henry - 9 years ago
Thank you. Not much of a Fan of urchins. They are like little bulldozers. Always knocking things over. Just got a couple lettuce nudibranch's hopefully they will help.

You mentioned that tap water is being used as if it`s not a problem, but perhaps that`s why the tank is being over run with bryopsis...

Glad to see he us using a collection container with a float switch shut off.  I use to run a reef octopus external and those things had a high risk to flood your floor.  I loved the constancy though, you dont have to worrie about sump water height messing with the skimming performance.
Chris Henry
Chris Henry - 9 years ago
Yeah a collection cup with a shut off is the only way in my opinion to run those skimmers. And I hate dealing with fluctuations in water levels and how that affects internal skimmers. I pull out a lot a skimate with that skimmer.
Thanks for watching.

I think the ro might help with the Algae!

Thanks for tour!
Chris Henry
Chris Henry - 9 years ago
Yea I have been dosing mag it's over 1600 ppm currently. And cutting as much as I can off the rocks. That seems to help the most. Also added a bunch of snails and hermits and that has helped a lot as well. The stuff is a nightmare to eradicate.
guidedbyechoes
guidedbyechoes - 9 years ago
Oh sorry thought it was hair algae. I hear it's difficult to get rid of. Please document what you did if you can beat it.
Chris Henry
Chris Henry - 9 years ago
Thanks. My tank phosphates are 0 ppm and the nitrates are 0 ppm as well. I have ran gfo but it doesn't seem to help with bryopsis.
guidedbyechoes
guidedbyechoes - 9 years ago
I hear people have really good results with gfo. Biopellets work really well too for dropping nitrates and phosphates. But they work so well the water is too clean to support most corals. I would suggest trying those if you ever have to battle gha.
Chris Henry
Chris Henry - 9 years ago
Yes it might. Been running the tank with tap for 2 1/2 years and just in the last year started having problems with it. Filters are on there way and will be going back to ro soon.

Great Video Guys. Kick-ass Tank Chris. Just Curious, whats the tds out of your tap-water up there in Oregon? Here in NY its about 35-40 and Im kind of tired of hooking up my RODI unit to my faucet every time and Ive been kind of leaning toward just going straight tap LOL
Chris Henry
Chris Henry - 9 years ago
+Chris Henry so I have checked my water several times over the past few weeks and it is running around 65-84 ppm tds.
Chris Henry
Chris Henry - 9 years ago
Not sure. I will borrow a meter and check it. I will let you know what it is when I find out.
