He's a FuManchu lion, so he doesn't get very big. This is fortunate, because he would definitely eat any invert or fish small enough to fit in his mouth. That being said, he never harmed one creature (other than the ghost shrimp I fed him) in that tank.

@Brian Millsaps Having a small fish in a small tank doesn't cause them to have ich. This fish had ich because the store I got it from is notorious for their fish having ich. It was a very new addition as of this video and lived for several months after before succumbing to the damsels harassment.
Brian Millsaps
Brian Millsaps - 11 years ago
Your angel looks like it had a serious case of ick..I'm sure the damsel constantly attacking it didn't help with its immune system getting used to your tank. I once tried a bristletooth tang in a 40 breeder and even though it was only about 1.5" long the tank still isn't large enough.
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 11 years ago
@redham05 That would be a fu Manchu lionfish.

great reef, what is the name of the fish at 2.08?
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 11 years ago
The key to success with angels and a reef tank is to kept them very well fed. I never had this angel pick on anything, but he died not too long after the video due to the damsels attacking him constantly.

Thank for the reply, one last question do you get the emperor picking at coral from time to time like some of the dwarf angels

Thanks. This tank has since been upgraded to a 135 and is now the sump (check out my other videos!). The coral at :17 is a pulsing xenia. Fairly common coral that lots of people will often give away for free. The emperor angel is fine for this size of tank as long as you get it as a juvenile. People will tell you it gets too big for this tank-which is true-but it takes at least a couple of years for it to grow up.As long as you have a plan to move it to another tank in the future you're fine.
Constantino kokkinidis
Constantino kokkinidis - 11 years ago
Very nice reef you got, is the emperor angel fine in this size tank and could you tell me the name of the coral in the front at .17

In a 40b? Skip the tang, diamond spot SLEEPER gobies will starve in that tank or just ruin the sandbed and any corals on it. Stick to shrimp and perching gobies. HTH.

you can't keep a blue and yellow tang and a puffer in a 40 gallon, even if they are the fish from nemo
kmayberry5263

you should get the fishes - brown puffer, orange stripe clown, blue tang, yellow tang, large red shrimp, and a starfish :3

so if i dose every day it won't run out of the calcium, alkalinity ect.
Tristan J
Tristan J - 11 years ago
yeah i'm getting them asap (as small as possible lol) the smallest i can get is yellow tang: 1-2 inches blonde naso tang: 3-4 inches. but i think they grow pretty quickly? probly if you give them alot of food options and healthy food, thats what im gonna try to do :)

yeah thanks - i will be dosing every day though
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 11 years ago
Also, if you get the tangs small, it will take 4-5 years for them to out grow a 90 gallon tank, so don't be too worried about it.
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 11 years ago
Sounds like a good plan. Only thing is, I went the no water changes route for a while and my parameters stayed in check...but all those essential minerals and elements the corals need get depleted over time. This includes calcium, which is going to be used A LOT by your SPS. If your calcium drops, it affects your alkalinity. So you will either have to dose all kinds of things, or just invest in an RODI like I did and do water changes.
Tristan J
Tristan J - 11 years ago
*continued* so, i will plan to have the 6 fish and replace the tangs every 1-2 years (or when the yellow tang gets to 7-8 inches and the blonde naso gets to 9-11 inches) with lots of SPS and a few LPS with acans, and NO water changes (unless needed) because of all these benificial things and no overstocking, i won't have to do water changes :)
Tristan J
Tristan J - 11 years ago
yeah, i have done a crap load of reasearch and this is how i am planning to do it: a yellow tang, blonde naso tang, royal gramma, clownfish pair, neon goby, small amount of fish = the 1 inch per 5 gallons fish rule (18 inches for 90) so with 6 fish, not overstocked, a great skimmer, a 40 gallon refugium/sump,miricle mud and a deep sand bed in the sump and main tank, and at least 60 pounds of live rock, 500w of metal halides and a chiller, ATO and reef keeper lite plus. so, (will continue comment

jetstream01
jetstream01 - 11 years ago
Actually, the best tank I've ever seen in person is a 90 gallon SPS/high dollar LPS, and it has two full grown tangs living in it in addition to a small yellow tang. I think if you start them off young in the tank and they grow up in it, they are generally fine. The fish do create accidental frags a lot though haha
Tristan J
Tristan J - 11 years ago
oh ok - that sucks about the damsel -_- i am setting up a 90 with 2 tangs, i think they grow fast though?
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 11 years ago
It's a 40 breeder I think it was 3ft.
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 11 years ago
It will get to big, but it takes many years for that to happen. When it finally does, you either get a bigger setup or give it away to someone with a bigger established tank.
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 11 years ago
The tank has been upgraded to a 135 gallon reef for a long time. See my other videos. But yes of course you need to have a long term plan when placing small versions of large fish in aquariums. Just remember-they take YEARS to get big, so you can have small tangs or angels in small tanks as long as when they get big you either give them away or get a bigger tank. Besides this, the angel was killed by the stupid damsel after this video was taken.

I started with a 4 bulb T5HO fixture that I later modified to make a 6 bulb fixture. I was able to keep any kind of coral I wanted in there and even saw a lot of growth on my SPS. This tank is now my sump in the 135 reef! Check out my other videos.

I hope that's not true, i used conditioned tap water (with salt added of course) for my tank that is done with the cycling process (no animals yet) and my nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia are all zero, also the salinity, alkalinity and ph are all great, I have ordered lighting and it's coming soon, but I'm hoping my first inhabitants will be fine, I'm not sure whats wrong with tap water, but if theirs anything wrong with it, please tell me before i put inhabitants in the tank (its a 40 gal breeder)

No anthelia definitely does not need strong lighting. I have never been a fan of power compact and I'm not really a fan of LED lighting either, but that's not to say they don't work. However, which ever lighting you chose, the anthelia will do fine. I actually ended up giving away the anthelia in my tank because it was taking over everything. Even in my new 135 gal tank, there are still little heads popping up everywhere!
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 12 years ago
Thanks! This tank is now the sump for our 135 gallon. Only tips I can give ya are ALWAYS USE RODI WATER! And make sure it's from a good source. I'm confident that's my #1 secret to success. I have never put any water besides RODI in my tank. And keep up with water changes and have a good skimmer. If you do all three of those things you will be successful! Good luck PM me with any questions you may have.

Ive always seen people have 40 breeders but was always scared about levels and one of my corals nuking the tank. So i always stayed 55 and above with atleast a 20 long sump. My last tank was a 72 bowfront with a 20 long sump. Lighting was t5HO 2 10000k and 2 actinics with blue leds. Dual Koralias #6 with a smaller cheapo oscilating power head pushing behind the rocks. 80 pounds of fiji with a 4 inch sand base. Only thing i didnt like and had to modify the crap out of was HOB my overflow box
jeramie james
jeramie james - 12 years ago
Nice setup! I think im going to start another tank and run with a 40 breeder pre drilled. With a tank that small how hard is it to keep your levels just right? Love the lawnmower blenny too .... they are my favorite addition to any of my tanks. They are like the dogs of the saltwater world lol running around eating every bit of algae they can find and they are curious lil guys. Plus mine would sit at the front of the tank and just look at me when i would wipe it down lol.

40 gallon breeder is the size, I have one that is specifically an aquarium but I have seen 40 gallon breeder tanks there were meant for Reptiles and were labeled "Not an Aquarium" so keep that in mind. the Exo tank you have may not be the best choice to use for an aquarium. I would measure the thickness of the glass. My 40 gallon breeder aquarium has 1/4 inch thick glass.

@scrom29 Unfortunately the fu manchu recently died of starvation due to a stupid mistake I made. Otherwise, the fish was the best I've ever owned. He never bothered any other tank mates and had a great personality. I wouldn't put any other lion in a reef tank because lion fish no matter which species will eat anything living that is big enough to fit in their mouth. In the Fu Manchu's case, he will not likely get big enough to eat anything other than a ghost shrimp or krill.
scrom29
scrom29 - 12 years ago
how does your fu manchu lionfish do with the clowns? Im thinking of starting an Indo-Pacific reef tank, and was wondering since larger lions go for little fish too.

@my2clownfishrule All Glass makes a Marine rated version of a 40 breeder as well. They are used quite often in fish breeding...which is where the name came from. But you are right...the reptile versions are not made with high strength silicone bonding agents and will burst seams if you fill them all the way.
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 12 years ago
@my2clownfishrule Not sure if it was "meant" for aquarium use or not, but I've done nothing to reinforce the tank in any way, and in fact know several people who have 40 breeder reef tanks. Never had a problem! I can see your cause for concern tho, as the tank doesn't have a middle support across the top.

@babybabygirll Yep you are right-but they don't ALWAYS pick on corals. That goes for all angel fish-some individual fish do pick on/eat coral, others don't touch them. It sucks that juv emp. died because he never ever bothered corals, and the bi color angel I have in there now totally bugs all the coral :/

@NEY310LA How long has your tank been set up? Trust me, this tank went through its fair paces of having algae and diatoms. However, they have never been as severe as what most people see because I have only ever used 100% RODI water. NEVER tap water. If you would ask me one single piece of advice to give to new reefers, I would say to use only RODI water. It eliminates a lot of the problems you would normally face.
jetstream01
jetstream01 - 12 years ago
@rostibluh You could probably keep the lionfish in a 20 long, as they don't get much bigger than 3-4 inches. However, it would be better to keep him in at least a 40. Keep in mind when you're shopping for one that you ask what he eats-mine only eats LIVE ghost shrimp. That's it. Nothing else. Which is why it's kinda a pain in the ass to have him but he's my favorite fish so he gets the extra effort.
