May I ask - what is the purpose of the downturn U for a foot before going back up to the return?
pelphrey
pelphrey - 5 years ago
This was an old old design that I never ended up using. My plan was to use the U to add a manifold to it. I ended up redoing all of that plumbing later on.

What size babr did you use? Looks like you used a reducing bushing, I want to plumb a cor 20 with 3/4 pvc. I have no idea what size that green ugly tubing is.
pelphrey

Reducing that much will def create a bottle neck.

It is 1" PVC reduced to 1/2" so I could use the soft tubing.

Hey Man, Have same tank... Just installed a Cor20. I need to install a 1 Inch Apex Flow Sensor and need to run soft tubing. Problem is, the Flow Sensor comes really far down, so I have to run soft tube and a loop around in a circle. I need to fasten the hosing to the top and maybe sides. Where did you get the plastic grey hosing clamps in this video??

Thanks for stopping by and following along! I really enjoy the tank and don't regret this purchase at all. The tank is one of the hardest decisions when it comes to the entire build. Quick question if anyone can answer this, also I am new to plumbing. What does he mean by the PLUMBING IS NOW CURE?
pelphrey
pelphrey - 6 years ago
I used this primer and cement -

Primer http://amzn.to/2hLXhcU
Cement http://amzn.to/2iGJLIf

Be sure whatever primer and cement you use it states that it is safe for potable water. Which means it is suitable for use with drinking water pipes. You use this around any fitting to join the pipe. You apply the primer to the inside of the fitting and the outside of the pipe. Give the primer a second then apply cement to the inside of the fitting and outside of the pipe. Push the pipe into the fitting and give it a little turn to make sure the pipe seated correctly.

I highly suggest getting a PVC cutter, this cutter will ensure a clean smooth cut - http://amzn.to/2A2hsLL

Checkout Fishofhex videos, he has a few videos showing you how to glue PVC. https://youtu.be/9uqyHBIWwM4
Richard Guzman
Richard Guzman - 6 years ago
pelphrey, ok that makes sense. What kind of cement did you use? Did you apply around all the fittings? Also when you say fitting do you mean the gray elbows? As you can see I am a beginner lol. Thanks for your fast reply, your videos are awesome!
pelphrey
pelphrey - 6 years ago
When you cement the fittings they need time to cure. Meaning that the cement needs time to dry basically.
Andy Glade
Andy Glade - 6 years ago
Hey Pelphrey. Looks good. Im trying to figure out how to plumb my reefer 525xl now. May do something similar to what you did. What size tubing is that? It looks like pretty small diameter, was there an option to use bigger tubing, did you narrow it for a reason, or is it not narrow and just appears that way in video? Thanks!
Andy Glade
Andy Glade - 6 years ago
Mine didnt come with tubing, but ill pick some up. Ill check out all your videos. Thanks, man!
pelphrey
pelphrey - 6 years ago
The tubing came with the tank, it is around 1/2" tubing, the PVC was 1". If you look at some of my newer videos you will see I changed up the plumbing, I am still running 1" to 1/2" tubing into the tank. I am also reducing that down to 1/2" for a reactor and my algae scrubber. Unfortunately the reefer will only accept soft tubing.

I believe you can actually take the barb fitting off the reefer tanks and use a fitting like this ( https://www.pvcfittingsonline.com/3-4-x-1-sch-80-pvc-reducing-male-adapter-mpt-x-socket-836-102.html) with some tape around the threads. This will NOT thread into the reefer, but a lot of people have used it with success.

Look up "Broadfield" on reef2reef or checkout the Red Sea Reefer Series thread on reef2reef. Hundreds of pages with all kinds of information!

pelphrey wow super thank you for writing down for me. I will buy blue too.. Hahahaha ha. Good luck to me. Tytyty
pelphrey
pelphrey - 7 years ago
I bought all of the fittings and pvc pipe from Bulk Reef Supply. The pvc pipe comes in 5 foot sections, you'll just have to cut it to length for your setup! For this particular setup I used 1" pvc and SCH80 fittings, fittings I used were a 1 1/4" to 1" reducing adapter, SCH80 1" 45 and four SCH80 1" 90 fittings.

A few other good options for PVC parts -

Bulkreefsupply.com
Supplyhouse.com
aquariumspeciality.com
http://www.pvcfittingsonline.com/

I used Oatey clear PVC primer and cement. The clear is a lot easier to deal with, unlike the purple which will leave a mess if not cleaned up immediately. I've always made sure that the cement and primer were recommended for potable water. If it is recommended for potable water it means we can drink from it, which makes me feel much more safe using it on my tank.

http://www.oatey.com/products/plastic-pipe-cements-and-primers/oatey-pvc-cements/pvc-regular-clear-cement

I hope that has helped. I am in the process of redoing all of the plumbing once I finalize a few more pieces of equipment.

Bob Escher that is a load of BS. No lost of head pressure because he has reduced it there for at that point thats where the head pressure is regain.
Bob Escher
Bob Escher - 7 years ago
I had a pump rated at 660 and after it ran it started whining and in my investigation I realized that I am running the pump fuill blast. Wrong answer I didn;t take into account head pressure or anything So now im looking for one at about the 1500 GPH range and then ill run it at only 35% with room left over
pelphrey
pelphrey - 7 years ago
hahaha I mentioned this in the video, I understand I am impacting the head pressure. With limited cabinet space this allowed me to push everything to the back of the stand and still have room to add gate valves down the road. This is also why I went with a pump that is rated double the amount of flow that Red Sea recommends on this tank. My return pump is currently running on setting 3 of 5 - I have great flow coming out of my return into the tank and my sump turnover is to my liking.

Optimal is up for debate, this setup is currently perfect for me and the path I am traveling. I am not looking for a large sump turnover rate, what I need is for water to be filtered through the sump and placed back into the display. IF I feel the need to make any changes down the road re-plumbing this system will be easy. In the end my return pump output is 1 1/4" - the hose that came with the Red Sea return input is 1/2" so reducing was going to happen at some point anyway. I decided to reduce the return the 1 1/4" down to 1" to save on fittings and more importantly gate valves. 1" spears gate valves are $35.99 whereas 1 1/4" gate valves are $49.99 - which is a significant savings IF I start adding 2 or 3 valves to this system.

pelphrey
pelphrey - 7 years ago
I did this for a few different reasons, I didn't want tubing in the way with such a small footprint and I want to run 1 pump. You can add T's with soft tubing for sure if you want, and soft tubing will be a lot cheaper! The color PVC isn't expensive, the sch80 fittings get pricey quick!

pelphrey
pelphrey - 7 years ago
haha The stickers have been removed! So far I have done an okay job by keeping the sump manageable, we all know how this can get out of control quickly! I don't have any immediate plans for a reactor and when I do get one I will probably run one of my smaller pumps on the reactor at first. With the plumbing like this though I can adapt very quickly and easily! They key and I forgot to mention this in the video is to use CLEAR primer and glue! It doesn't make any visible mess at all!

Stay tuned the videos will be rolling again, I've got a ton uploaded!
