One of the best videos you have done in my humble opinion, really enjoyed this one.
Can you mention the dates on some of the videos? so we can get an idea of how far we are behind and the weather at that time of year. You guys are living my dreams. It's great to see someone sailing from the UK abroad and doing a journey we would love to partake. The only disappointment is when the video gets to the end :(

I hope so, My only 2 boats are motor at the moment but my passion is sail. Both boats are out of the water at the moment, the biggest having an engine transplant. If I can get the new girlfriend hooked, I'll be following in your footsteps. I need to get her to try motor and sail to see which she prefers. I'm missing the water terribly.
Watching your videos takes away the withdrawal symptoms.

Thanks so much Paul! What a lovely comment. Sorry, we usually put in one or two dates on each episode to give a time reference, but maybe we forgot for this one? We got to the Cies islands around the beginning of September.
Who knows, maybe we'll see you out here, one day? Elena & Ryan

I have given this advice to other sailing channels. The sea legs are actually in the pelvis. If the pelvis locks in a twist when you are straining against a load there is a corresponding twist in the skull as part of the reflexes that keep you standing. That often affects the vagus nerve which makes you feel sick. Observing your face the right eye socket appears more open than the left indicating the twist. To set it straight have your husband pull the left leg while you are laying face down until it doesn't feel stretchy then cough to set it in place.

Thanks for the tip Hans.
Hans Quistorff
Hans Quistorff - 6 years ago
Yes the reflexes in the tummy [abdominal muscles] are often involved in holding the pelvic distortion which is reflected in the joints of the skull.

Stand on one leg and rub your head and tummy that will work too.

Thanks Alex! We’re currently repainting Kittiwake and working on our freelance work (we’re in the yard). We don’t actually have any plans to fly to the UK at the moment, but we’ll let you know if we ever swing by Falmouth. Fair winds!

I agree with previous comments ... videos are getting pretty good. Good job. I follow loads of sailing vlogs and have seen many transits of the Spanish and Portuguese coasts ... but they’re usually in a big hurry on their way to the Med. I love the way you’re taking your time to explore the coast on your way down.

Thanks a lot Phil! We like to cruise slow and see more of each country, but we also kind of have to, as we need to stop to do freelance work every few days. We love it.

Well done guys, I like your sailing philosophy. I did not understand one thing: are these last year's videos or are you currently sailing, in winter?
In any case, I wait for you for a beer in Sardinia, where you will find the real "best beaches" in the world :P :-)) Ciaoooooo e buon ventooo

Scusa non avevo visto questo commento. Grazie mille per i suggerimenti. Ah beh se anche tu vivi in barca quando passiamo, sarebbe il top condividere una baia. A presto. Elena

Grazie Gianluca! Non sappiamo se passiamo al Nord in barca, ma quando saremo a Cagliari vorremmo esplorare tutta l’isola (in treno o auto a noleggio), quindi possiamo organizzarci per una birra o un caffé se ti va :) -Elena

Just a question, What made you pick a Catamaran over a standard sailboat?
Sailing Kittiwake
Sailing Kittiwake - 6 years ago
The short answer is: it was the comfiest boat we could get for under £10K - great for downwind sailing, which is what we do 80% of the time, and for shallow anchorages. If you'd like to dig a little deeper, here's a blog post that explains it all :) 11 Reasons Why We Chose A Small Catamaran: http://sailingkittiwake.com/11-reasons-why-we-chose-small-catamaran/

Sure, when dolphins check you out from beneath you, it's awesome; but when I do it, it's creepy. So unfair.
evanofelipe

Consorting with dolphins, dazzled by bioluminescence and boat-only access beaches are essential elements of long distance sailing, so that's proof you're making real progress on your sailing adventure.  And thanks for sharing it with us.  Stay safe.
Sailing Kittiwake
Sailing Kittiwake - 6 years ago
Thank you so much Evano Felipe! Some really lovely words as usual, thank you.
Thanks to your previous comments, Elena's trying to learn about videography, which will hopefully show in the new season's videos. We'd probably need a directional mic for the sound issues (we can't afford to pay for editing software and our current software doesn't eliminate background noise). Maybe we'll upgrade at some point, if we get the spare cash.
If you have any tips on how to eliminate background noise, please give us a shout :) We use this mic http://en.rode.com/microphones/videomicro and DaVinci Resolve for editing.

That looks like a really practical solar rig. Was it hard to wire up? Also love the new sail and thanks for the tour of places not usually seen.
Sailing Kittiwake
Sailing Kittiwake - 6 years ago
Hey Ken, cheers! Our panels are great, but they’re flexible and so probably less efficient. They weren’t very difficult to wire up, but you have to wire things up in order or you’ll get big sparks everywhere. We wired ours up as a combination of series and parallel in order to get the most voltage out of them.

Is your dinghy named Marica? Must have gotten quite a laugh in Spain...
jmayuk
jmayuk - 6 years ago
The proper English translation would be "sissy" (as in effeminate), so I would say that it isn't so much offensive as that it might raise an eyebrow or two. But just as it is perfectly plausable in English to have someone named Sissy (for example the actress Sissy Spacek) I think the Spanish would understand someone being called Marica. Especially if they are from a different country (outside Spain).
Sailing Kittiwake
Sailing Kittiwake - 6 years ago
We're not sure on the exact translation, but apparently it's a word that describes gay people. We don't know if it's offensive/politically correct; we'd like to know. We'd expect any word that isn't a simple and plain "gay" could be offensive, but you never know. We surely don't want to offend anyone :( Bad coincidence!
Sailing Kittiwake
Sailing Kittiwake - 6 years ago
Thanks! Oh really? Do you know the proper English translation? We thought it'd be an offensive word.
thedrloboski stevens
thedrloboski stevens - 6 years ago
Just what does the word mean?
jmayuk
jmayuk - 6 years ago
I'm sorry to hear the story and you have my deepest sympathies. As for the word itself, its not really offensive in Spanish, so I wouldn't worry about taking it down. Just maybe be prepared in case someone says something.
Sailing Kittiwake
Sailing Kittiwake - 6 years ago
Yes, it’s the name of a friend of Elena’s who passed away before we left.
No one ever laughed or said anything (we didn’t know it meant something in Spanish!) but we might take the letters down when we go back to Spain this year, just not to offend anyone. We’ll put them back up once we’re out of Spain to honour Marica’s memory.

It's so great to hear someone will follow us! And so soon! Congrats. We're a little behind with the anchorage information updates on the blog, but these two posts should get you going: http://sailingkittiwake.com/category/anchorages/. Any questions, feel free to drop us an email. Fair winds! Elena & Ryan

That's so nice to hear Andy. Please do let us know if you have any questions on places and anchorages for your own trip. We used a grand total of 2 marinas all the way from the UK to the Algarve (Ortigueira and Figuera da Foz), so we can share lots of anchorage information, if you need any. Fair winds, Elena & Ryan

Nice video. You missed the real most beautiful beaches, though. That is the ria before Ortigueira. The beaches between O Porto de Bares, O Vicedo and Porto do Barqueiro are jewels. And (almost) no tourists. And no permits. Go there next time..
