I love all the clowns talking about riding a shorter board. If you never been out there you don't know what you are talking about. If Steve Dwyer is waxing up a 9'6" for you, take the 9'6". The amount of paddling that is required along with the wetsuit is a challenge to your fitness level. Ocean Beach is not a recreational wave.

The best spot in Nor cal is steamer lane at santa Cruz. It has lots of kelp. go nowhere else. When the swell is huge surf pleasure point, ten minutes south.

don't waste your time in norcal. It is always stormy or windy. The best size and conditions in California in the winter are found at either sunset cliffs or Encinitas. In the summer hang out at Newport and no where else.

Stoked that you got a few. You probably could have just gone with a step-up. I’ve been surfing OB for over 10 years and rarely go out when it’s over 10 ft. anymore. Just be careful; it’s deceptive. Mike Parsons broke his neck out there, and the rips and currents are pretty gnarly with the the influence of Bay. It can get pretty serious if you break a board or snap your leash (it has happened to me). You should surf Deadman’s and/or Fort Point while you’re in town (low tide). I also lived in Oregon for awhile. This time of year the winds are going to be onshore. Your best bets are the left inside the Florence jetty at low tide; Boiler Bay, which is a slab inside a protected cove; Cape Lookout, which is a right point break that you have to hike into; and Seaside Point. Seaside is one of the top five waves that I’ve ever surfed, and it’s good pretty much all winter. Surfline claims that it’s the best left Point break in North America. Just keep a low profile because the locals are world class douche bags.

BG! what a great piece on the Nor-Cal scene; gave us all back here in NJ a cool perspective on that whole scene, so thanks. Also, as someone who surfs a bit, I so appreciate seeing how someone of your level and experience can experience some of the butterflies when going out into some heavier situations, so thanks for the honest look. Question for you: Jersey big in the winter (e.g.day u ran into the GOAT) seems pretty fierce and faster than those waves you were surfing out in SF. What's more intense and why? Thanks!!

Thanks Adam! Stoked I can share my reality and it can be appreciated!! The surf here is coming from a lot deeper water so whether it looks like it on film or not, every wave I've surfed so far has been pretty heavy. The swell is massive when it's coming in & you can see it coming at you, then when it hits the rock or sand & pitches it's a lot more water then at home. The swell periods here have been around 14-19 secs. At home we max out around 12 secs. Pacific is no joke!!

So stoked for you, pushing it and that 2nd session at the pier getting pitted deep. I think that board was just a foot or two to big but it's better then the 5'10" at O.B. but the swell should be picking up again. Rumor in San Diego is Cortez might be perfect, nothing like a sea mount 100 miles off the coast to charge at! But that's a mission for the hard charging pineapple slaying novelty king I reckon! Lol!

Happy anniversary, Sensei Steve! When I worked in Silicon Valley in the late 80s/early 90s I always surfed Santa Cruz. One day I decided to 'man up' and surf OB. I never made it past 1st bar and washed about a 1/2 mile south to the rock pile. Good times.

I'm glad you switched back to a smaller board. A 9'6" "gun" is too long for that surf in my opinion. I took out a long "gun" one day and I got very frustrated because it was really hard to maneuver (which means I'm not going fast enough for the board's design). I think you would have tore that surf up on a smaller board. But you still caught some really fun waves. That one barrel during the afternoon session was ridiculous. That one wave would make the whole trip worth it.

Did you guys check Pacheco or Noriega st further north? Waves are usually a lot more hollow. The paddle out is definitely longer though, but worth it.

Living the DREAM!!! Only time I've been in anything similar is hurricane swell when it pumps on the outside down at Flagler Beach Pier. One of the best bowls next to the pier! You should definitely look into it when the hurricane season starts. Would be epic to see you there!
