Thinking of a Lagoon Seventy 8 non-crewed. Thinking of it as an alternative to a house.

Im not even sure what questions to ask....

Oh yeah... Once the investment comes through we could do anything we wanted to. We could do BOTH many times over...

But the big expense in it all isn't the purchasing of these things, it's the money NOT made because that money is NOT invested in new orchards.... you see?

I mean... In the 4 years to becomong mature, a kiwifruit orchard will double or triple in value.

So a 3.5 million dollar yacht is actually costing you the profit you didn't make (7 million).

Because of this, its one or the other Initially...house or boat.

After the orchards have gone through a few 4 year reinvestment cycles, so like... In 8 or 12 years... THAT'S the time when you do both.

But damn... Can I REALLY live on aboat for 8 years?

And even worse, can I live in ONE house for 8 years??

The thought if being tied down in any one place too long is painful...

Without wishing to rain on your parade, think of a house as an appreciating asset and a boat as a depreciating liability. Thats a good starting point. Can you afford this scenario?

Guys, thanks for sharing. I know everyone asks what it costs, and everyone who's done it seems reticent to answer because of the complexity of the topic. We really appreciate your honesty while trying to tell us what it costs. Fair winds and following seas!

Love it... very interesting to see this kind of perspective.

I'm looking at purchasing a cat in 3 years time and have started doing research as you do. Cost, self education, looking at booking charters over the next few years on the types of cats I'd be interested in purchasing. So I have subscribeded and look forwrdto seeing your experiences. As a novice at best I found it very interesting.

Sounds like everywhere is different regarding requirements . I will, however, only be sailing the med so if you know anyone or things I should be learning from that would help guide that process of making the dream/reality an easier transition I am open.

Currently a boater on the London waterways.... But not forever!

Blessings to you both.
Thanks for the ray if sunshine ;)

Hi . I've been given a gop hull since storage was breaking the serenity of a couples union(so to speak). I am gettin on a bit so it helps to hear your story amongst others. You reminded me of what kind of hole in the water it is that I now own. do you fish much? what kind of foodstuffs are kept onboard? If you just set the rig in open water and go to sleep while on a course might you wake to a disaster unfolding as a result? Captain Joshua Slocum I heard ; had no auto pilot? If I recall rightly there was a sea anchor and a steering vane controlled by current or wind to keep the tiller responding. Might be not correct since I got the story by conversation long ago. Most important I found is 'income'? How to . . is the measure of whether one can travel . Great film anyway, the first of yours I watched yet.

Hi i bought a 42 foot ketch in spain for 8000 euros 1980 and it has been amazing almost 0 problem one of the big things is it is steel so it still in good shape and the only thing we need to replace is the engine that was working and get some extra Tech devices. do you have any recommendations ? i have only done island sailing with it but later this year we sailing to Cape verda and then to the Bahamas.

Do you have a video of what it costs or procedure entering and leaving a country. do you have to spend time docked in a marina?
I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting to know more of the dark side so to speak. dangers at sea, big ships, whirlpools, pirates? I'd imagine it's not all clicking beer bottles.
also, do you see yourselves opening up to having guests aboard that can join your travels for a few and possibly teach tour know how?
Thanks the both of you

To me the most important point you spoke about wasn't about money (of which I have none) but about the stress. Before I retired I had a very stressful life. Now I live in a cabin in the mountains. Judging from your video here, I'd say vanners and cruisers have a lot in common, especially about looking for a less stressful lifestyle.

IF one has a boat that is big enough for a three thousand watt solar panel consider the following...

While at dock, or if one is able to access internet devices. Consider BitCoin mining.

Preferably buy the right type of computer gear; but will also work with most any computer get as long as one has ten gig of hard disk space - also preferably ssd. Once set up properly the gear will generate trading money on it's own. The better the system, the more money one will make.

I've set up computers with solar/battery on board relative small to medium sized vessels that easily make one thousand per month in BitCoin

What's the deal with boat insurance? How much is it? I see some folks that sail with no health insurance & no boat insurance & their reply is that it's too expensive or that they wouldn't be covered in a named storm, etc. Well, what if they run aground; hit a log at sea; hit another boat; injure a guest or a crew mate on their boat; or injure someone on a different boat (and on and on and on)? With no insurance, wouldn't a boat owner be one accident away from bankruptcy and/or being sued? What does insurance cover & what does it not cover? Thanks & Chip's Ahoy!

EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT!!!!! I am a retired Merchant Marine Captain, 37 years experience on the water, 20 of which as a Captain.
You two have put together the most informative and truthful video on what it is like to be a "Blue Water Sailor". If you get a chance stop by Guam and check us out. It's a great rest stop after Hawaii. You can get a preview at; aquamanchartersguam@yahoo.com, my friend, Captain Gie, owns it, I used to drive for him. He's got a facebook page. The boating community is very tight and supportive. Marianas Yacht Club is where you can moor your boat close to shore...cheaply.

What you say about your expenses make sense as well-off sea-gypsies (a term I learned from Capt Fatty Goodlander in "Buy, Outfit, sail"), until I heard you solved the power problem with hydra-generator - seems like hi-tech and new to me. Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose with all due respect the title was misleading. I was looking for a flat number with a quick answer. Because of a discussion I was having with someone. A more appropriate title could be, the total explaination and breakdown of the cost to sail around the world. Nonetheless, I enjoyed your video and did not mean any disrespect. It's a habit I have along with others in the community to notify future viewers in case they are just looking for a simple answer like I was.

My boat is a 50 yrs old Albin Vega, 27 ft. I paid the equivalent of 3,500 $ for her, well maintained and recently refurbished. Need self steering, communication and nav gadgets plus all the safety gear, but I go slow on the expenses and make short sails in my own country (Norway) to gain experience and do the necessary upgrades along the way. I once had a dream of going around the world (maybe I eventually will, the boat is definitely capable of going all the way), but life has taught me that a new world is waiting just around the next headlands, so that's my way of starting my singlehanded adventure.
Just bought new mainsail and will check on standing and running rigging as I go.
Take your time, but you need to start somewhere. If you don't put one foot ahead of the other, you will find yourself standing still. 30 ft is not big, but it's absolutely doable if it's a boat with a good oceangoing reputation and you are a man (or woman) of experience, if you plan to go all the way around.
Good luck to you! S/V Tiger Lily.

Thank you for your video. This is the first and only channel to which I have ever subscribed. I lost my wife on vacation May 29th in the Dominican Republic on vacation. Your comments at the end of the "How much does it cost ..." absolutely hit the nail on the head. "LESS STRESS" is what we are looking for in life. For most people it starts with money, but continues to "Time. Relationships, and Future". I am rethinking everything. My Bucket List may be changing. Happy Sailing...

-------------------------------------------------------------

I once crossed the Atlantic/Caribbean/South Pacific with my three kids, their sun-burnt mum & I. A wondrous age for us all!

Yes indeed, too many yachties spend too much on too big a boat.

It's the bigger is better, (safer) reflex/myth. Bigger isn't necessarily better for a small cruising crew. Buying a bigger boat is an absolute commitment to much, much higher & unassailable cost.

Try this as a rule of thumb :- The costs/sailing budget increases almost by 30% compounded for each foot over 36ft. That means running a 40ft -42ft boat can be just about 300% more costly than a 36ft yacht!

Furthermore, this rule of thumb applies to the 'manpower' too. That one snagged headsail mid ocean that takes the absolute strength of one man on a 36ft yacht to free - requires 3 men on your 40 ft-42 ft boat.

Bigger boats are tighter to dock too...

As a guidance...

--------------------------------------------------------------

A new boat's value will depreciate 10% - 15% p.a. compounded for the first 5 years irrespective of whether it is picking up harbour rot tied to a wharf, pontoon or dock, our out at brutal sea.

Whereas a good classic ( 15 years plus) hardly depreciates IF the boat is being kept in 'ship shape', and so many are. Thankfully there are thousands of boat owners that are never ever going to take their boat anywhere, but for an annual scrub & polish haulout, and a the obligatory sail-past at the opening cruise!

--------------------------------------------------------------

In the year I crossed the Panama (2004) I was one of the last boats through in 'the season'. and that was about the 1700'th yacht (both ways) of the year. Many turn up/north towards the US, so pitiful few, attempt the annual South Pacific crossing, and that is confirmed as only about 300 yachts round South Africa each year.

===============================================================================================

There are 12.1 million registered boats in the USA.of which 95% are smaller than 26ft https://www.nmma.org/press/article/21009 so say 600,000 ocean ready & capable boats, and about the same in Europe I'd guess, at a guess? (lead by France, Germany, and Britain ?) so lets say 1,200,000 yachts about the planet , that COULD do great things.

Only 300 odd actually do, do the the circumnavigation thing.

It's a big dream.

Many of the best boats get to Martinique and then their crews divorce! For many, for so few have ever had to TRULY live with their spousespartners... that's live as in LIVE 24/7 in absolute confidence & trust.

That said - it's a wonderful dream. I am one of those blessed few, (by Neptune?) that live to not regret hounding their dreams.

That said ocean sailing is very, very doable, the biggest fails are the interpersonal failures, by & large, and the troubles that could not or are not left behind.

It is a small / vast world out there, no convenient fast food outlets, TV, internet, etc., a delight ... for some, despair for others.

Frigates blue skies, whales & the darkest nights and the endless open seas, and scrapping from exotic port to port to make repairs, the blackest clouds , the clearest stars, and distant bars, the sweetest beers, and fond friends and then eventually it's "land ahoy!"

It's the best of everything, it is the worst of everything too ... It's your Gaussian expectations squashed & flattened into an an unrecognisable intrigue & a delight. Unforgettable memories, of places & people....

Bon voyage..

How to Sail Oceans
How to Sail Oceans - 7 years ago
Good job tackling the cost question! I'm always squeamish on the subject. Last time I calculated my costs I came in around 1,000 USD per month. I have a small (31' on deck), relatively simple boat. I almost always anchor out, and I haul the boat once a year. I'm sure these costs have gone up. As the boat gets older and racks up more miles I have to repair and replace more equipment. Also I find that over time I want my boat to feel more like a home than a campground, so naturally that means spending more money (e.g. I started without refrigeration, then I installed a coldplate a few years back, now I can't live without it ...).

I wonder how technically competent most people in this lifestyle are. I am considering cruising on my little ship, if and when I convert her for sail. However, I AM highly skilled, have done absolutely everything barring welding, in converting her from a small navy ship to my only home. I have replaced the engines, built the superstructure (which I may remove again anyway, if my sail plan works well), built the combined heat and power system, solar panels, wind generator. I am an all-round engineer, but specialised in electronics for 30 years. I will have machine tools, and woodworking facilities on board. I don't anticipate using marinas at all (too expensive for a 100ft vessel). While I am not a seaman, I have been sailing since I was a child, and grew up in a boatbuilding yard (my dad was a naval architect, boatbuilder, and marine surveyor). In the end though, it may be my health that sinks my long term plans.
Shane Kennedy

I am 3rd generation sailer, my dad was a boatbuilder, shipwright, naval architect and marine surveyor, and home was a barge (on the river Shannon in Ireland) until I left home. Living in a house didn't suit me ;-) so when I gave up on my marriage, living on a boat again was the obvious choice. I should have bought a smaller one though ! My daughter is a Science graduate, and sailing (boards, dingies, and day skipper) instructor too :-D , while I have NO formal qualifications in boating, I did teach basic boat handling when I was 15. My first recollection of sailing solo was at 4y/o on an ice yacht, in 1962. What part of the world are you in at present ?

Some people are very savvy with boat fare, and some not so.
My advice, get a boat as soon as you can and get started before ( as you stated ) your health gets in the way.
If you are a little bit handy, you could buy a fixer upper and get on the water earlier. Just make sure you get a survey before you take the plunge.

Good luck

I am a new subscriber so you probably have covered my question in a previous video. Did you have previous sailing experience? I am going to take my first sailing lessons this summer, at the age of 56. After the sale of my business in a few years I am planning to purchase a boat, sail around the world for a year, alone, and then sell the boat. Would you think that a week of on board sailing instruction a year over a period of 4 years would do?
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
Hey Max, Thanks for the comment and thanks for the sub.
As for your question, well everyone does it in various ways. My thoughts are that you can learn to sail competently in about a week in a small boat, but you need to then learn for the rest of your life. We still learn now on a daily basis.
I started by doing what you did. Take a 2 day dinghy sailing course to understand the real basics of sailing.
Then I bought a boat. A small, beat up 25 ft boat that I loved, and didnt cost the world. I went out every weekend, to sail and stayed on her every weekend. This taught me far more, but also it taught me how to fix and maintain my boat. I learnt engine maintenance, sail care, how to varnish, do carpentry, splice rope, polish steel/fibreglass, climb a mast safely and many other skills. So that when I wanted to leave I wasn't scared of these seemingly daunting tasks.
It's not for everyone, but just how I did it. Knowing how to sail is not even half the job.
However, the fact that you are planning and doing your research is a good first step. Good luck in achieving your dreams. I promise you it is worth it.

Great Video, thanks a lot. one note, I don't agree with not needing AIS. I was sailing from Granada to Curaco and in the middle of the night another boat was on a collision course with us, but they were running without lights. We we're only able to avoid them because they were transmitting AIS.

$40,000 for a boat 30 years old? Make sure you see the lawyers before you leave for your will. That is absurd. That will buy you a boat that will neatly park you on the ocean floor.

Yachts 30 years old require a complete refurb to be seaworthy to even a modest degree. That includes rigging, mechanical and hull. That would cost around $80,000 conservatively, even if you spend a couple of years doing the work yourself (and you better have had a lot of experience). The motor (max 15 years) and rig (standing 12 years max and running 5 years, mast section 20 years max although some people gamble to 30 years) would be way way past their use by date.

I have seen it happen and managed over 100 yachts.

Nice people living in Disneyland.
Thomas Elliott
Thomas Elliott - 7 years ago
Oh and yes, there is electronics and electrics that alone can eat $30,000 without trying, oh and plumbing (do you want to be poisoned by old plumbing systems?), self steering, hull osmosis. Just an antifoul is bloody hard work and costs $2,000 minimum.
People do not understand that a boat lives in the most extreme environment. Would you trust a rattly 30 year old car to go around the world on land where you cannot drown? Try multiplying the deterioration by roughly 5 times for a boat. You have not much left. Every single thing on a boat that age is unsuitable for an offshore passage.

I admire you both for the courage to jump of the hard for a more desirable lifestyle. It seems incredibly difficult to me to comprehend leaving the security of a reliable paycheck and known expenses to launch into the financial unknowns of where the revenue stream will be to sustain the lifestyle. I am an engineer in the power generation industry. So converting my craft to an internet revenue stream would be very difficult.
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
Thanks for the comment.
So here's the thing. It is hard. Hard to let go and sail off. We had so many worries about what to do if it went wrong. I was a dentist with my own business, and if I had needed to go back, I would have had to start from the bottom again and work up. Also, it is not a job that you can do from the internet.
Different people have different levels of commitment to their lives on land. House. kids. job.
We tried to transition as smoothly as possible. We spend more and more time sailing over long weekends while still working. Then we spent two summers on extended vacations making sure we liked the life for say six weeks.
Then we jumped.
So far we have found that most people have 2 major hurdles to overcome.
The first is actually buying a boat. We have met so many people that are very vague about when they want to buy. Maybe in a few years. Ok, for some it is a financial thing. But we saved and had an account we called " boat fund" . We could see what we had and knew that we were saving for a definitive goal. This made it a little easier to see our savings increasing. However this was the easier of the hurdles.
The second is actually leaving. We also know many boat owners who have yachts and keep telling everyone they are going to go in a "few years". Nothing materialises and they stay safely tied to the pontoon.
The best advice I can give anyone, is to NEVER say you are going to "sail around the world" or "sail to the Bahamas", because then you have to live up to that expectation.
Just do what we did and say " we are going sailing". It removed so much stress and expectation from us.
Luckily we loved it and continue to love it.

Regarding your SSB Radio, I would recommend that you look into a HAM license, a Signallink modem and software such as WINMOR if you are finding the subscription for your Pactor modem a bit of a liberty. If you take the Marine SSB route you end up paying a premium for everything, including the week long course (pay to play), whereas you will find that Ham Software is generally free, and the study that goes with being a HAM is also free (and significantly more detailed) and courses are offered through distance learning. The knowledge gained from studying for the license is the gift that keeps giving as far as living aboard goes.

Thanks so much! Our white sails have not been replaced since we bought the boat 5 years ago. The jib is now ready to be replaced, although because we do so little upwind sailing it's not really a priority right now. When we do replace it, which will probably be in the next year or two, it will cost us perhaps around $1500 US. The code zero cost us about that (have had it for 5 years also, but won't need replacing for a good while yet) and the Parasailor cost us about $7000 and is still in perfect condition.

One thing I've searched the internet for and got no good results is what brand/model sailboats have withstood the test of time as far as repairs and upkeep go? Yes, I'm sure each boat is different depending on owners but there must be a consensus on good and bad brands.
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
+Bob Bradley it's such an open ended question, but I'll try to answer.
It comes down to the quality of the initial build, how thick the fibreglass was laid down and the competence of the boat builder.
Some older fibre glass boats pre 1980s suffer from delamination which can be serious.
Some brands or makes that I know of that have been around for years, that are well built yachts include
Sadler, contessa, moody, westerly.
These are all British yachts as I don't know the US brands.

I think that 40k figure is a little high. There are plenty of 30 year old proven sea boats floating around that can be picked up for under 20k. I bought and equipped my Sigma 33 for cruising with an Epirb, life raft, hydrovane, solar panels plus a load of of other upgrades all for under 20k. One of the best answers to that tough and ever present question of costs of sailing. Thanks for the percentage of cost of boat to maintainance. It confirmed what I didnt want to acknowledge. This sounds about right. I think we'd fall under the category of working while sailing. I wish we had assets to make our life less stressful - the best option we see so far is to have property and rent it out while sailing, but we looked into the future and foresaw no opportunities to own property until we'd be MUCH older, if at all. And the whole point of what we're doing is also is to sail while able-bodied. Agree with all you two are saying. Thanks for the good video version of this topic!

I started out with a 1981 Cal 39 four years ago. The goal was to have it fully refurbished and ready for almost anything in 5 years. I'm fairly handy and can perform most of the upgrades, which I thought would help curb some of the cost. The initial survey of the boat and the price was too good to pass up. Four years later my dream is almost a reality, but it was not cheap by any means! I'm easily approaching $100K of up grades (with a lot of that being labor). Everything has been replaced. Last few items are the Rudder / Steering and adding a couple sails. So, that will be another 15K min. I plan to make a video tour of the boat very soon. I have every receipt and a spread sheet to show exactly where the money went. Thanks for the video on what it costs to go around the world. I'm in Newport Beach, CA. Drop me a line if your in the area. Thanks, Sam

Hi there
Thank you for sharing your experience !
You say you have another different expense fund for the boat to cover the unforeseen , is it on top of your 3000$ living fund? If yes , how much is it or how much have you spend per month just for the boat so far ?
Cheers for now
Nicolas
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
Hey Nicolas- the other 'slush fund' is for big, unusual expenses. An example is when we bought our dinghy/outboard earlier this year. That was about $6k that didn't come out of our usual monthly budget. Same for a lot of the big ticket items we've fitted out our boat with (ie, the $20k figure we mentioned). Or if we suddenly need to fly home and store the boat. It's basically our savings account.

Cost of taking a "bluewater" boat + cost of kitting it out to actually leave the Solent = possibly surprising for some. And yes, this is so much more than we ever dreamed it would be too. xx B (your newest internet-poor subscriber)

The HF radio will work when the sat phone does not. If you have a storm going on with thick cloud cover forget your satphone but your HF radio will get in through the static crash still.

If you want a later and greater HF radio you will pay thousands but many older radios are still just as good for maritime. To use an example here, the newer Codan radios (NGT) are still fetching $1500 or more second hand where an old Codan (9393) is around $600-1.2k with the tuner and older (8528) with tuner could be had for just a few hundred and will still do the job for you.

You could always cheat and just buy an amateur HF radio at $1500 new/$300 2nds with tuner and modify it to run on marine and hope noone sees it :P.

Subscribed :-) and really appreciate the fun and lessons I learn your videos. Here's the start of a list for offshore cruising equipment that maybe you can add to as you think about equipment (about $20k - $30k) that should be included in the costs for an ocean cruiser to be safe and sustainable . I'm new to sailing off-shore (haven't done it yet, and I'm taking the ASA classes soon), so I plan to use this as a checklist as I compare similar boats to purchase. A boat with more equipment is likely to be more expensive than a similar boat without it, but a $5k - $10k difference for a similar boat with more of this equipment should save me time and money vs my having to purchase and install it. I don't know most of what you mentioned in your video, so I may have duplicated items or misspelled those. Thanks for your putting the time, effort and $$$ toward sharing your experiences. Cheers!

Awesome Nicole! Sounds like a brilliant plan. Our camera is the very simple, versatile and user-friendly Sony RX100 mark 2. https://www.amazon.com/Sony-DSCRX100M2-Cyber-shot-Digital-Camera/dp/B00DM8R866/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1497022257&sr=8-3&keywords=sony+rx100+2
We bought it because we weren't sure if our YouTube channel was going to go anywhere or not and didn't want to invest crazy amounts of money in a camera. It works pretty well and is especially good in low light with an F-stop of 1.8.

Also, I don't know what the other commenters have said, but our "boat buying" series has brought out a number of folks that clearly imagine that this is a cheaper alternative to living on shore. In a way this might be true if you were living on a derelict boat somewhere off the radar, but to do it right is not cheap. I'm literally staring at over $10,000 in electronics that will eventually be used to upgrade our purchase to modern standards.
Shane Kennedy
Shane Kennedy - 7 years ago
I don't anticipate using OEM equipment unless there is no alternative. IMO, PC's, Android in a Pi, software defined radio, will shortly become the norm. The hardware will be generic. I have seen numerous supposedly waterproof electronic modules, made useless by a very small amount of water. All these modules "breath" as they warm and cool. Older equipment, that built with discrete components, are less vulnerable, and can be repaired reasonably easily, with still-common components. Boats, especially at sea, are a bit like motorbikes. You can delay water ingress, but you will never eliminate it.
Sailing Yacht Talisman
Sailing Yacht Talisman - 7 years ago
"Will be"? Have you tried this yet? Because what you're going to find is that you need a firmware update and there isn't one ... not even an old one, still available. You'll go to get charts for your older chart plotter and find out that it takes CF cards instead of SD cards, and there aren't any being made any more. I'm telling you, when it comes to electronics the manufacturers are phasing out all the stuff you need, and on purpose I'm sure. But the end result is you'll be stranded somewhere with obsolete equipment and and an obsolete spare.
Shane Kennedy
Shane Kennedy - 7 years ago
What is obsolete about stuff that works ? Get a spare, and keep it in a sealed bag until you need it. As an example, I have two 1980s Furuno radars. Both of them work just fine. I would rather have an old unit, plus a spare, than a new one, unless and until I can afford a black-box unit, and two computers rigged with full failover. One will be Engine/ship systems, the other, navigation, radar, and AIS display/plotter. None of my primary systems will be electronic, even though I have an enclosed wheelhouse rather than a cockpit. Even boat engines should not have electronics, they are just too susceptible to salt ingress, especially when they have fine-pitch components,
Sailing Yacht Talisman
Sailing Yacht Talisman - 7 years ago
What part of "these older products are not working and not supported by the manufacturer any more" don't you get? We're keeping all the older ST60 repeaters if that makes you feel better, but what's the point of scrounging around to find used, semi-obsolete equipment that'll only have to be replaced again in a few years?
ysesq
ysesq - 7 years ago
there is do the job right and then there is do the job right with the most shiny new expensive toy i can find. getting a NMEA 2000 network over a NMEA0183 datalink is not more reliable or more right. it doesnt have to be shiny and expensive. it just has to have reliability. you dont add navionics to a tablet. you use the tablet as a second screen with a wifi datalink to your simrad unit. youre trying to justify $10K worth of bling which is fine but just be aware that it is bling. you can get superior results with more functionality for cheaper.
Sailing Yacht Talisman
Sailing Yacht Talisman - 7 years ago
I hate doing this on Nick and Terysa's site, but it's germane to the discussion. There are two distinct types of sailing; coastal cruising and bluewater/offshore. If you're going to do the latter, you need (or should have) professional grade equipment. That includes modern radar, AIS, SSB or satellite communications, VHF, and a modern chartplotter with the appropriate SD chips. You can add Navionics to a tablet as a backup, and you should also have paper charts as well. Does this mean you absolutely need all this? No. People have been sailing the world with paper charts and a sextant for centuries, and nobody's going to stop you from following your dream. But if you have the means and plan to actually get out there and do it relatively safely, the above is the correct way to go. Additionally, the quality and features of the newer gear are amazing, while the price of the products is actually coming down (see Raymarine Axiom system). All the time I get posts from viewers telling me how you can use this or that outdated system and freeware for various life-safety related tasks. Personally, having shopped the market pretty heavily, I feel such plans to be fool-hearty. Yachting on 40' plus sailboats is never going to be cheap, so get that out of your mind right now. Save your money, know what you're buying, and do the job right.
Shane Kennedy
Shane Kennedy - 7 years ago
One advantage of upgrading, especially is you buy 2nd hand, is that you have the time to shop around, or wait till something suitable turns up on ebay. If you set out with older equipment, especially the essential stuff, is that if it fails, you need to replace immediately, and that usually means new. Not many people have the skills to repair their own electronics, rebuild their generator or main engine/s, or splice/swage their own rigging ! An ex next-boat-neighbour splices all his rigging wire, he doesn't trust compression fittings. If my plan does come together, I will have free-standing timber masts, so no rigging to worry about anyway.
ysesq
ysesq - 7 years ago
nmea isnt supported, lol ? what do you care if your equipment works ?
yes you too can pay $12,000 for your electronics or you can build smart and get the same effect for $1200.
Want grib files offshore ? use an SD card and load em from a laptop. Get your iPad inside your cabin, use the waterproof evo2 outdoors.
you can buy a ferrari for getting groceries but you can also get a cheapo hatchback for the same effect.
Sailing Yacht Talisman
Sailing Yacht Talisman - 7 years ago
Yeah, iPads work great at the dock. Not so much when you're offshore and outside the 2-3 day weather forecast window. You need a way to get grib files offshore. As for sonar, we don't have it. NMEA 0183 isn't supported any more, and although a lot of cruisers use the SSB with a modem, the better way is via satellite link. Good stuff costs money, and if you're going to be serious about it, you have to pay.
ysesq
ysesq - 7 years ago
thats completely nuts. you dont need all that at all. i have more functionality than most sailboats and i spent way less than that on mine.
you can get a simple windvane, a dual ais/vhf radio and hook it up to a chartplotter with nmea0183. a simrad evo 2 can also handle the sonar output - use a fowardscan. you dont need a high bandwidth datalink inside your boat - just use your ipad as a second high res screen.

I forgot one question that I caught second watch through. Isn't it cheaper to not dock in a marina and use a dingy to come up? Or is that usual price no matter what. I have a friend that sails and I recall her saying you can save by using a dingy and parking out in the water. But I may be understanding this incorrectly.

Hey! Yes, you're absolutely correct. It's almost always free to anchor and go to shore by dinghy. It's also cooler (in terms of temp) and usually more scenic. We much prefer it. However, a marina offers benefits such as wifi (usually), unlimited electricity & water (bliss!) and if the weather's bad it's usually safer.

I agree - made the same experience - 2'500 - 3'000 US-$ is very realaistic for a 12m boat and 2 persons. With a smaller boat you can bring it down to 1'500 to 2'000 US-$. Important is for sure reserves. In case of disaster you'll need cash for a new start up. Cheers from the Philippines

Hey Nick just to let you know you really don't need a sat phone , it's just a waste of money the way I see it , all it's going to do is like you folks are parents back in their Australia or the UK call you whenever they feel like it . To be honest most of the time you'll never need it or use it . Just go out and get yourself a good VHF and shortwave band is okay at times to .
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
+Seaworthy Hammy not true unfortunately. We use ours lots. There are so many places that have zero phone signal and calling home is a must for us.
Also weighing up the relative costs. A day phone is cheaper over say a 5 year cycle than ssb

Gday guys,
Enjoying this video. I'm curious about your comment on the value of your hydro-generator... if you spend a month on anchor then how does the hydro generator help? Surely wind-geni would be annoying, noisy, but works both sailing and at anchor? I've heard a few folks rave about hydro geni's but don't understand the attraction! How many days a month/year are you actually sailing so you can get power from it? Appreciate your thoughts....
Cheers T
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
Hey Terry, it's true that our hydrogenerator only gets used on offshore passages when we're not motor-sailing. If it was a choice between the wind gen and the hydrogenerator, the wind would, well, win. Ours is an airbreeze and is almost silent.
Terry Griffiths
Terry Griffiths - 7 years ago
OK, cool. Thanks for that. So does it (they) still get used much cruising the Caribbean? Hang-on, just thinking about it... your Atlantic crossing was maybe 3 weeks out of 5 years of cruising? But you still rate it as 'god-sent'? - awesome endorsement!
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago

Lankster Price
Lankster Price - 7 years ago
Real cost is about $3 a foot for your boat coat. Maintenance account is a must. Lots of hidden cost that's why its at a factor of x3 per foot. You'll find this average to workout over a year. It should leave you with a little money for things like flights and unexpected cost that will pop up. Big cost in channels, and some water ways. Pull your boat out and storage at times.

3x44 foot boat = $132 a day
132x 30 (30days) = $3960.00 a month

Each boat will cost a bit more and some will cost way less...

Yes you can do it for far less and cut cost if your will to cut out things by doing them yourself.. and yourself meaning a lot of jobs.

I see so many boats advertised as "turn key"...and what that really usually means is that the boat can sail away from the dock that day, no problem...but what it also usually means it that many of the systems can be 80-90% through their life cycle.  You can often expect to still have to open your wallet very soon for new rigging, chainplates, sails, etc. etc.  I think many people see the price of a boat and think, "I can afford that!", but the costs of owning a boat only begin after the initial purchase price.
Norman Henry Martin
Norman Henry Martin - 7 years ago
Turn key does not mean it will "last" a long time before maintenance. Good point about the duty cycle of equipment.

I currently have a 41' ketch, but will probably move up to something in the 52 to 65 foot for my upcoming retirement/ permanent live aboard. I love my 41 but feel my wife and I will still need a bit more space for guests etc. Have you guys considered a bigger boat or does the 38 work well? If you had to do it over again, would you have opted for a bit bigger boat?
phreewillie
phreewillie - 7 years ago
Yes, I go back and forth. I have an Irwin 41 which, for a 41 foot boat, has a ton of room as well as water and fuel storage. I have looked at moving to the 68 but that does exclude you from a lot of marinas and the cost is ridiculous to haul and store. Something in the 50ish range has the third cabin and overall has more space and stowage. I just have to remember, you can always change homes if it needs to be done. Thanks and safe travels.
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
Well, we would like a bigger boat and in fact Ruby is on the market at the moment as we hope to get something a little bigger. However, it's mainly because we would like the storage space and waterline length for a bit more speed. I wouldn't buy bigger just to accomodate guests, as tempting as that might be. The costs you incur, both upfront on the new boat and ongoing in marina fees, haul out, maintenance etc will be a huge step up from 41. You'd be able to pay for hotels for your guests a hundred times over. Just something to consider. Good luck!

Great video as always.I always enjoy watching all of your postings. Just one question how was the camera mounted as its constantly moving with the boat? I felt I was on the boat and a bit seasick LOL
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
That is an excellent question and I wish I had the answer!! No idea. I can only assume that as the pressure on the tripod legs changed from one side to the other, there was a minute shift of the camera. I was annoyed about that too!

working 6 months on 6 months off is hard to do since storing the boat is expensive. Also you never know what you will come back to. Trying to be the next youtube sensation is like hitting the lottery, not likely for most... for me, i'm waiting for retirement. 3 years left. Used to have boats, but the cost is to great when also raising a family, paying the mortgage etc... just look at any marina and see just how many boats are just sitting there corroding away. While my taste run to 200,000 boats, my next boat will be 30,000 or so. I will put in another 30K and be happy with that. I plan to live on ~1000 usd /month with a reserve.
As far as stress... having a expensive boat, with lots of gear, that you can't walk away(from fire, hitting a reef, sinking etc) from is stress... a cheaper way is to learn to breathe, do yoga or meditation, and don't worry about it. Whatever happens will. While 50-60K would hurt, it won't kill me. But a 200K boat plus cost to refit... would break my bank and make me homeless.....
Thanks for sharing.

Off-topic question: I notice that you use a 'Hyrdovane'..
Do you also have an electronic autopilot? If so, how do you use one vs the other?
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
Good question! We have an electronic autopilot which we always use when motor-sailing as the engine keeps the battery fully charged which powers the autopilot. When sailing longer distances (more than a day at sea) we use the hydrovane. Sometimes we use them both together as the hydrovane takes the stress off the autopilot by keeping the boat on course, and the autopilot can just make minor adjustments or bring the boat back on course if we start rounding up (only happens in big following seas in our experience).

Seen multiple videos about the costs of cruising. I think you covered this subject very well without being too specific as every couple will have a different burn rate depending on lifestyle and the yacht. You spoke about your goals at the end and tying that in with the type of boat and activities you do. Very wise words. We have a 26' sailboat as our weekend cottage and ❤️ it. Do we want more boat? For sure, one day. But when I come back to the office on Monday, I always have a great weekend to talk about. Thanks for sharing.

S/V Tranquility
S/V Tranquility - 7 years ago
Still hoping to run into the two of you somewhere out there. What you said about budgeting is spot-on. There are cruisers who live on solid old 35' boats with budgets of $1,000 USD and the other extreme as well. The boat IS THE KEY. Buy a boat that is solid with a reputation for seaworthiness, as you said. Keep the gear simple! Less complexity = less maintenance = lower boat budget. Lifestyle budget, as you said, is a matter of choice. I see you two lounging about in Infinity Pools I think WTF? Personally, I prefer a more modest lifestyle which is my primary reason for cruising full-time making my living expenses low also I am single so grocery / alcohol budget is lower.
This lifestyle is A CHOICE. Be prepared for the realization that everything you take for granted on land will be significantly more limited, difficult, or expensive, etc. on the boat. However, if you seek happiness, serenity, and a more meaningful life then cruising is definitely the way to go.
Again, the boat is the key. There are a lot of great boats for sale in the U.S. Don't be reluctant to look at a 50 year old boat, back then the builders did not understand the strength of fiberglass so they made hulls with 3-5 inches of solid fiberglass. These boats are nearly indestructible. Get a good survey ($$$) but worth every penny. My experience purchasing my 49 year old girl is that if the asking price is $60k USD and the boat has been on the market for a year or two then offer something in the low $40s pending survey. If the boat has been on the market for 2-3 years you can steal it for a fraction of the asking price. Of course, this assumes it is a boat worth having = personal taste and survey results.
There are according to Sail magazine about 12,000 cruising boats in the Caribbean. Forget about having the perfect boat perfectly fitted with all the gizmos, waiting for that "right time in my life" otherwise you'll be 65 and still waiting. Buy a good boat, get minimal gear to ensure your safety and JUST GO. Everything else you can figure out when you get out there.

Two Cents Worth from a 50 year old retiree cruising who couldn't be happier.

Mate, it is not just about the boat, it is also about excursions and getting to know the places you are sailing to. I agree there are people who are happy to live on water, rice and what they can gather together for free. But this is not the "perfect" cruising lifestyle, at least not for me. Then to be selfresponsible, you should have a health insurance which covers your crusing grounds.

Hi, generally South FLA, Bahamas, etc. Currently near Grenada to ride out hurricane season. I found a steal on a Bristol 40. She had been on the market for 3 years. Minimal equipment; i.e. depth, wind, speed, VHS, GPS, AM/FM/CD+. All the electronics were upgraded in 2013. Lots of other important things were also done like rebedding deck hardware. She was clean and ready to move aboard when I bought her. I put her in the yard for 4 months to paint the bottom, and install other electronics, additional batteries and solar, etc. During this time I transitioned my life for cruising. FYI: the Bristol 40 was named the 23rd best cruising boat ever built!!!

Totally agree. I'm an ex pat Brit living in the USA and electronics are a heck of a lot cheaper here. People here do a lot of upgrading to have the latest and greatest so definitely check eBay and the like. I did my Ham license here and it costs me $40 for 10 years. License initially cost me $50 for lessons and test IIRC. Boats are generally cheaper here too as there are more marianas and it's a lifestyle that a lot of people can afford due to higher salaries. Repairs of exotic yachts might be more expensive if parts have to be imported but I would guess in general it's cheaper because it's a big business and competition is strong.

I watched the video, paused it to read the comments and came up with a synopsis; if anyone wants this life style: 1. Do the planning before hand 2. Be honest with your life style ambitions 3. If you have questions about how....dig in and find out by your own grit and drive.
No one can say whether or not you will be a good fit for sailing...no one can expect to take all the unexpected out of it but, in the big picture, as we have seen and heard from Nick and Theresa, the responsibility is yours as well as the rewards.

Sailing Remedy, I would love to hear the results of your research. Would you mind emailing us at yachtrubyrose@gmail.com? This is exactly the kind of information we're after at the moment. Our boat is (sadly) up for sale so all information is useful. The hull slap and boat motion is a bit of a worry for me, as we intend to do a LOT of sailing as we circumnavigate. Thanks so much for your response.

We purchased the boat 1,100 miles away and sailed it home over 11 days across the gulf and around the Keys. I was very impressed with everything about the boat. It is light, nimble and fast. We easily sailed into 35 degrees with the code zero up. The Jeanneau was an amazing sailing boat, especially into the wind. The Orana is right there with it, but faster. We day sailed last Sunday and left the monohulls in our wake. The only thing I need to get use to is the wave slap on the underside of the hull in heavy seas. We sailed a couple of days in 6 ft seas with short duration and had some pretty big slams. It makes a lot of noise, that's about it. Even in those heavy seas, we were able to cook and move pretty comfortably around the boat. At anchor, it is not really a fair comparison. The Cat is so much wider and much more stable. I did a ton of research and won't voice opinions here but would be happy to share. We sailed at least a dozen Catamarans and settled on a couple of models in the 43-45 ft range. I sent you an IM on Instagram. Thanks for the reply!

Thanks so much SV Remedy. Tell me, how do you find the transition to sailing a catamaran? We're thinking of making the same change, but are nervous about sailing performance and comfort under sail. Would be interested to hear your views.

I know you have a water maker onboard. Do you consider that pretty much indispensable, considering how much time you spend swinging on the hook (let alone for the Atlantic crossing)? Also, I don't believe you have a generator....is that something that's an issue - especially considering the water maker power requirements.
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
Hey, two good questions. Yes, we find a watermaker indispensable. We actually wish we'd bought a higher output one so we had to run it less, but it keeps us going. We don't have a generator (no space onboard for one) but we run our engine every few days if the solar and wind aren't keeping up with power requirements- or if we need to run the watermaker, yes.

Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose - 7 years ago
Yeah, that's a tough one. Really depends on the country. Sometimes is around the $300 figure, sometimes it's closer to $50.

Nick, for internet, check out TEP.
It gives you unlimited 3G/4G internet for £5.50 a day. You only pay that when you actually have to connect.
It uses the same sim, so theres no faffing about and works almost worldwide.

It's a delicate topic, but best handled honestly. I think we made it clear that our budget is just our own level of spending. There's a lot of people doing it on far less, and far (FAR) more.

I watch a lot of sailing vlogs and I have to say that I look forward to Ruby Rose episodes the most. Normally it is for the entertainment value and to live vicariously through your lifestyle. The great outlook, the funny attitudes and the Brit sense of humor. But this one is full on educational as well. Kudos for illuminating a subject that many would be cruisers need guidance with. As always fair winds and following seas. Peace

Robert, thankyou so much for your kind comment. We're so glad you enjoy the regular vids, but thought it might be fun and interesting to do something a little more informative.

I am very glad I stumbled across your channel. You are absolutely my favorite "Sailing [insert boat name here]" channel.

I'll be retiring in 10 years or so and I will have a pension that would cover the expenses you mentioned. The main challenge I have is getting a good boat and having it paid off before I retire. I think I can probably work that out though. Your boat is pretty pricey if I am not mistaken. Congratulations on that.

You can definitely buy very comfortable sea-worthy boats for far less than what we paid. You can also pay considerably more! But yes, for a 38 ft boat it's probably up there in cost.

Thank you so much for sharing information concerning your actual budget.  Most important, you articulated  the initial  "hidden"  cost.  Be safe.  "The best you can do is to go out and come back. It is what happens in between that defines and determines your seamanship."

Yep, sv TikiCat is correct. It keeps you sailing at a specific angle to the wind. It's purely mechanical so no power consumption, which is important for us. Also less likely to blow up and need replacing!
